Who Will Be Manchester United Caretaker Manager?

The Manchester United caretaker manager talks are again taking center stage in the football scene with the club in need to find some stability in the short term after firing their manager Ruben Amorim. As the season is already dangerously on the verge of being lost and both fans and pundits are putting the pressure on, Manchester United has been looking in to the obvious. Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have also become the potential replacements to act as a caretaker till the end of the campaign, reminding people of the periods of transition used to take place in Old Trafford.

An old-time remedy in troubled times.

The process of appointing caretaker managers at Manchester United is not a novel development in the post Sir Alex Ferguson period at the club. First, the club is focusing more on continuity and culture fit in lieu of long-term vision and both Carrick and Solskjaers are deeply rooted in the contemporary history of United. Both the ex-players are aware of the pressures of the role, the attention that follows it and the need to put the performances back on track in a short period of time.

Personal meetings with the club management would be taken and even there is internal solitude that the joint arrangement may be considered. Carrick has been among the most important coaches in the Solskjaer coaching team, which increases the chances of a mutually beneficial interim arrangement. However, United too are open to their options.

Other short-term options and Darren Fletcher.

Darren Fletcher however plays the center stage in the immediate plan. Midfielder, who is current coach of the under-18s of United, has been handed over the interim duties in the meantime. He will lead the next premier league match against Burnley, the game that might affect the rate of which the club will make its decision on care takers to manage Manchester United.

Interestingly, there are certain voices in the dressing room that Fletcher can go to the end of the season in case of the improvements in results. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been internalised, but has not been spoken of as a candidate as far.

Solskjaer: knowledge and acquaintance.

Solskjaer has direct experience when it comes to the race of assessing the Manchester United caretaker manager. He has a management career of more than 470 games in several clubs. To start with, he worked his name at Molde, where he brought the first league titles in the history of the club. He later suffered a hard time in Cardiff City before going back to Norway but later succeeded at United in 2018 after the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer was initially offered a temporary position, but his performance after impressing with performances became permanent. He was able to lead United to a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2020-21 and succeed to a Europa League final. Nonetheless, the situation sharply deteriorated in terms of his form, which resulted in his sacking in November 2021. More recently, his short string in Besiktas ended in last August following failures in qualifying in Europe.

Carrick: fruit better than lineage.

Comparatively, the profile provided by Carrick is different. His credentials of a carer manager of Manchester United rest more on possibilities than quantification. He made the switch to coaching after retirement serving under Solskjaer and Mourinho. His three interim matches in the year 2021 at United were an unspoken success, having secured two victories and a draw.

Lastly, outsourcing his first full time managerial position was at Middlesbrough. During his first season, Carrick managed to lead Boro to the Championship play-offs and he came very close to securing a promotion. Following campaigns were not as successful and he was fired off last June. His win percentage is less as compared to that of Solskjaer, however, Carrick is still looked upon as a coach having modern concepts and grounded in good tactical background.

Manager Club(s) Games Wins Draws Losses Win %
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Molde, Cardiff, Man United, Besiktas 471 250 92 129 53.1%
Michael Carrick Man United (interim), Middlesbrough 139 65 25 49 46.8%

Meanwhile, Manchester United is already preparing past the period of caretaker. The permanent job, which the club is planning to fill in the summer, is already discussed as the position of the Crystal Palace manager, Oliver Glasner, or the position of the Marseille manager, who is named as Roberto De Zerbi. But Glasner has made it publicly known that he has refuted speculation, once again confirming his dedication to Palace.

Conclusively, the decision made by Carretier in regards to the caretaker manager in Manchester United is a sign of a club in need of something that is easy, not groundbreaking. Solskjaer is a seasoned and emotion-filled choice, whereas Carrick is a familiar face and future prospects. Someone has to hold the fort until Darren Fletcher comes back, and it will be seen in the next few weeks how far United go in terms of familiarity or silent rebuilding. The ideal caretaker decision may be the difference between the rest of the season and a club that is desperate to put its stead back on course.
