All of the Chelsea title contenders are still alive following a harrowing 4-3 win over Brighton at Stamford Bridge, but a lot of problems have been revealed that a new keeper won’t fix. The arrival of Emanuel could not come at a better time for the Welsh club as it was just hours after they officially announced his deal from Aston Villa – and the Argentina international was straight onto the field with experience, personality and authority. But the three goals and the four goal lead they gave up made it clear that Xabi Alonso has a lot more to do if Chelsea are serious about threatening the Premier League for first place. Martinez wasn’t given chance to influence a team after just one full training session with his new team-mates before he was shunted into the starting XI. For someone to appear comfortable in unusual circumstances is no mean feat, especially for someone who didn’t score Brighton’s three goals. It was also a big move from Robert Sanchez’s series of performances with the stakes on the table against Fulham where the goalkeeper was given much criticism for his involvement in the goals admitted by his team. For one thing, Martinez is the first player to bring experience to the house when Chelsea is in desperate need.For one thing, it’s the first so experienced a player to bring to the palace side. It has been a good level of attacking return for Chelsea with two league games in which they’ve scored seven goals. Meanwhile, they have conceded five, are now 18 matches without a shutout. It’s the longest streak they choose not to shut out an opponent in the last century, dating back to the 60s. But the real worry for Alonso might not be the goal keeper. Chelsea had a poor game in ball ownership against Brighton as they only managed to hold the ball for 25.9%. They managed only 146 passes, the fewest since they opened the season’s Premier League match against Sunderland in Sunderland’s lead-up to the game.This was their lowest number of passes since the introduction of the Premier League in 2003-04. Those numbers can’t be ignored for a team with an eye on the top of the table. A goalkeeper can save, organise and lead his defence but he can’t replace midfielders whose job is a lackadaisical one. That has now become even more complicated thanks to the absence of Enzo Fernandez. Unfortunately, yet for the second consecutive game, Fernandez missed him last match as Manchester City was reportedly interested, especially as a move could cost over £120m. In the meantime, Moises Caicedo’s fitness was also a concern as he was pushed of after just 11 minutes came off. That meant a unique midfield set up for Chelsea. Injured star Jordan Henderson was unavailable, and Mo Malo Gusto, Romeo Lavia were the ones who operated at the center. Apparently Barco was also not trusted to get onto the pitch to start a Premier League game yet. There was a lack of protection in front of the defence which was a factor in why Chelsea found themselves exposed. Alonso was also forced to travel forward to a back four as opposed to the front four, leaving Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill vulnerable in spots throughout his time out on the park. There’s also a set-work issue. If Chelsea are to have ambitions of competing with the Premier League’s best, they simply can’t provide repeated opportunities from dead ball scenarios. They require consistency, control and they must be able to close a game down from the opposition. Chelsea are good enough to play the up-tackling game this season. The Portuguese midfielder didn’t just hunt for his own goals, he also went out of his way to bring the chipped ball to him, to get his teammates headed in the right direction and to move forwards. The pinnacle was when United got the penalty. It was no different when Fernandes came in to the Stretford End and put United 3-1 up. The finish was a particularly important one because that’s the second penalty he was missing in pre-season and there was another “weight on the puck”. On the contrary, those ones didn’t seem to have an impact on him; rather, he was demonstrating the same kind of mindset that United have had the entire time he was at the club. He remained calm and found a gap and went past the keeper. 10 minutes later the captain made his hat trick, marking him the first captain in club history to do so. For Manchester United it was his third hat-trick of the season and the 15th of his career and it was a further sign of his uncanny talent for effecting the outcome of a match almost entirely. To add to his collection he may well have scored a further crazy effort by Fernandes from some distance out of the box soon after the restart when Ipswich lost control. The goalkeeper lived to tell about it with the ball on top of the goal! Carrick was someone who simply couldn’t ignore Fernandes. Having the midfielder in front has always been a main priority for the United head coach and the display here again serves to remind him of why the tall blue is the heart and soul of their plans. But, the future of Fernandes at Old Trafford is a real one for discussion. The 31-year-old will be up for a contract extension at Manchester United, but his final year is nearing its end. There has been interest from clubs abroad, though it seems unlikely to happen this month. The larger question though remains, is United to engage in Fernandes as the signings they have made are costlier than the player they would sacrifice in the interests of maximizing profit. Fernandes’ role on recent occasions cannot be underestimated, but right now it’s Rashford’s turn to hold that distinction. He provided Premier League tally-leading 21 assists last season as United climbed back into the Champions League after a two-year hiatus. Former United side player Ashley Young reiterated Brown’s comments, stating that Fernandes was the player to make Manchester United “tick”. It is based on the view of many supporters that United would not only miss out on goals and assists without Fernandes, but also be lacking in leadership, energy and creativity. The last throw of the ball was interesting. If Fernandes is already discussing a technical aspect with the substitute Benjamin Sesko, then it wasn’t until he’d given welcome to Ipswich players and officials that he discussed anything else. Then he noticed that he’d neglected to pick up the match ball and had to go around to the side and pick it up for his hat trick. That little moment encapsulates a bit of Fernandes. After scoring three goals and being victorious 5-2, his mind was still on the next pass, the next move and the next improvement. It’s also a great addition to the list for Carrick, who has a lot to grow by with that one. The United party had begun their game in a poor manner and their reply was the expression of character. France World Cup France take one step closer to yet another FIFA World Cup victory with a 2-0 semi-final win over Morocco. Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele led the way as Didier Deschamps’ side looked like the best team remaining at the tournament. Les Bleus have improved their World Cup credentials after having six successive wins and strong displays both up and down the field, and are now two wins away from a possible historic third World Cup title. France, who dominated the ball from the first whistle, made no mistake as they set the tempo and set the play. Morocco were unable to match the speed, any ferocity and inventive power of the French attack and spent much of the match in their own half of the field. France gathered multiple opportunities in the first 45 minutes, but couldn’t break through until after the deadline. Mbappe, who had seen a previous penalty saved, had the best of intentions with his first shot and netted the opening goal which saved a penalty earlier. Of course, his willpower brought out his importance in world football. The game was still only minutes old and the Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele finished it off minutes later with a second for France to make it all but impossible for the Moroccans to recover. France were undoubtedly on top with one goal in the 42 games played African side offered only one inside the penalty area. France have gone 16-0 in the game and are the top-goal side into the remaining quarter-finals. As for defense, they’ve given up just two goals in six games, which is just as impressive. Portugal vs Spain was a poignant, and for Spain, historic quarter-final performance that would send Portugal to the quarter-final of the FIFA World Cup, thanks to a 1-0 victory. In injury time it was Mikel Merino who put the game clinching goal on the board and left Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after missing the World Cup. It also ended Roberto Martinez’s reign as the Portugal manager as he followed the loss with his resignation. Spain are in the final eight, while Portugal have been left with questions as they flame out of the competition. The first kick came and it had huge significance for both teams. Spain enjoyed some possession over extended periods and appeared more at home with the ball, while Portugal looked for goals in the Brazilian striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. Everything was competitive all day long with both defences organised and limiting for clear opportunities. Portugal held their own well but eventually got to attacking Spain one side and Spain the other side looked the more dangerous. But it was Cristiano Ronaldo who, again and this time more than ever, took centre stage. Since the Belgian had started the game, he was 41 but had started nearly the whole 90 minutes and failed to make his presence felt like he did in the past. Ronaldo was able to find himself in front of the goal only a couple of times and also never within Spain’s penalty area. Leading and experienced as ever, even after emerging from the recent tie, Portugal had great difficulty getting going but Spain dominated the play the whole time. Again, doubts were raised as to whether Portugal could have found younger attacking players for such a crucial knockout game. It was a moment at the death deep in the final injury time. Spain persevered and another Spaniard, Mikel Merino, found the breakthrough, sending the Spaniards and fans into a frenzy. However, Portugal were on a tight schedule to react and when the whistle went there went they too. While leaving the field as the winners, Ronaldo got teared up as he realized the end of his World Cup dream had come to an end. Ronaldo’s WM career may be over but his accomplishments are unmatched in many aspects. He has scored six different World Cups, and concluded his career with 11 World Cup goals. Through his career in club and international football, Ronaldo has accumulated an astonishing 976 goals and won virtually all of the major awards on offer, going to include five UEFA Champions League titles and five Ballon d’Or awards (and the UEFA European Championship in Portugal in 2016). His incredible career hasn’t won any major trophies other than the World Cup. Roberto Martinez confirmed after being defeated that he was to move from his job as Portugal manager. He has admitted that his intention was to get the World Cup and when he didn’t and he’s saying it’s the right time for him to retire. Martinez thanked Ronaldo for his leadership and commitment, saying that he is indeed a true football icon with a commitment to any country. He has left another chapter close in what has been a turbulent patch for Portugal as they start to sketch their future. Some football pundits, especially, had many questions on Portugal’s tactics in the tournament. Some thought that Goncalo Ramos could have been a bigger weapon in the attack, while others thought Portugal was too Watson heavy this season. Portuguese team had talent worshippers on board like Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes but failed to go deep into the World Cup. Belgium vs USA ended one of their greatest ever performances from the FIFA World Cup in which they beat the USA 4-1. Charles De Ketelaere was the Poynter of the night in a stellar double in the 64th minute which benefitted Belgium in its resounding victory over the co-hosts. Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku were also chants of the scorebook as the Belgians were outplayed by Mauricio Pochettino’s men. Belgium came back strongly and were immediately in control of the match from the second half onwards although the USA got back on track in the first when they levelled off. Belgian elimination will take them to a World Cup music history-game with the Spaniards, and the USA are done with World Cup aspirations. Belgium had a great opening and were a threat from the off. They played fast, had good space and threw the American defence onto the ropes by providing themselves with plenty of space and by passing to their best forwards and backwards. They were fortunate with their early dominance when Nicolas Raskin was able to cross the six yard box in the ninth minute. Charles De Ketelaere struck the ball home on time for an early hit to give Belgium the lead. Brilliant easy finish, it was a sign of the attacking quality of Belgium. It was not until the second half, when the USA had regained possession, that they were able to take charge of this match.Belgium dominated before the USA could get used to the game, and take charge during the second half. The home side got back into the game in the 31st minute. Paul Scholes’ brainchild – Malik Tillman took up the role of taking a free-kick, though it was heavily deflected and burried Thibaout Courtois to gain goals. The equaliser brought some joy and for a few moments took the ball from the Englishman’s hands. But Belgium quickly reacted. Two minutes later Leandro Trossard flew in a fine cross which was headed over the rising De Ketelaere for the net. The belated reply demoralized USA and put Belgium in control until halftime. The second semi was all Belgium. They were patient, in possession and waited for another chance to take revenge at the American defense. It was when goalkeeper Matt Freese stepped in to play the ball out from the back and stumbled on his shot. De Ketelaere brought him down, recovered the loose ball and it just went to Hans Vanaken who shot it perfectly outside the box in the empty net. That was the expensive error for USA that ended any other possibility for any other comeback. Belgium produced opportunities throughout, while attack was lacking from the United States throughout. Folarin Balogun made his comeback to the Ayrshire squad in place of the suspended player after the Italian football federation lifted their one-match suspension, but Balogun’s pace and creativity was not enough against the sharp Belgian defence. He did, however, have one final chance late in the game in a tight angle, which Courtois made comfortable. Belgium’s midfield did not seem to suffer from such a lack of confidence either with Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Gio Reyna struggling to make a mark. But Romelu Lukaku could yet make his impact this time. The veteran club striker came off the bench in stoppage time and retrieved the ball in the box and completed his penalty goalkeeper-side to a comfortable 4-1 lead. Lukaku’s goal also gave him another hat trick for the number one man to score substitutes three times in one FIFA World Cup tournament. His concluding efforts did the rest which highlighted Belgium’s depth of talent. It also fulfilled the final hope of the remaining co-host country to raise the World Cup flags. The USA eliminated after Canada and Mexico had already been losers, as had also been eliminated in the Round of 16. Belgium were one of the better sides this tournament, but had their moments of promise, particularly in one of their biggest fixtures in the past few years. Belgium, on the other hand, are gaining momentum and now will take on Spain in one of the most contested quarter-final match ups of the tournament. For Belgium, it had been so much more than a simple score. Charles De Ketelaere gave his best demonstration of the competition, defence was well organised the whole time and senior LEPH players like Courtois, Trossard and Lukaku among others helped with the steady flow of the game. It was a sensational display from Jude Bellingham as England held off a courageous Mexico bid to secure a memorable 3-2 win and qualify for the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. A stretch of bad weather caused Thomas Tuchel’s team to suffer a significant time disadvantage, the captain and a second involved in a bad collision with a British international were sent off and a hostile environment at the iconic Azteca Stadium had the away side squandered a rarity of a second half restart to dominate the match, but still come up with a memorable win. Bellingham left his supporters in awe of his second effort to find the net after 98 seconds before Harry Kane finally found the decisive third from. England were level with Norway entering their 45 minutes, but got themselves a blockbuster quarter-final against the red-hot Erling Haaland. This evening was an unusual one, given that it started an hour later due to the severe storms that occurred in Mexico City. While it did not take the edge off the anticipation at the crowd-filled Azteca, it only heightened it, as almost 90,000 die-hard fans rolled up one of the scarier setups in international football. The home side had a superb record, having drawn only twice from their previous 89 competitive games at the renowned arena in Mexico. But England, put on a show of composure from the first whistle, denied Beaver, Stothert and Smear cheese eating fame. It was just in time before halftime and it came from England’s top star. After a scoreless start, Bellingham was able to completely turn the tables with a pair of brilliantly scored goals in 98 seconds. England’s patient strategy paid off with his first finish but he unleashed his next one virtually straight away, leaving Mexico floored by his strike and the away fans cheering him on from the opposite side of the goal. The Real Madrid midfielder wasn’t only outstanding in attack. Moments after putting his name on the scoreboard, he did something so perfect to deny Cesar Montes what appeared to be a lock-down goal that his allround efforts were just a marvel to witness on football’s biggest stage. Mexico hung tough and made a comeback, in time for the break, to reach the field. After England’s aim failed to materialise Julian Quinones powered home a great finish, leaving the home side with the crowd in their pockets. That put the ball on a different side of the bar, and stoked the fire in Mexico for the second meal at the table. Once the intensity of the game began to ramp up in the face of fervent home support, everything was set for England to slick on the st busiest part of the evening.The host-club had no reason to be on hold because the toughest spell of the game was still to come as the players stepped up in front of their very own, passionate fans. The contest was set to go to extra time after the restart as defender Jarell Quansah was sent off nine minutes later with a straight red card after a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo. There were only 10 men left to press England’s ironstrong defence and Mexico started to apply pressure in the face of an equaliser. Another classy player was Jordan Pickford, who impressed England. The veteran keeper did his part to make a World Cup night to remember, with several world-class saves to do Mexico to the noose. Instead, on the first-half ball from Raul Jimenez, he was able to dive in and clear rival’s England to even the score and again towards the end of the half he made a tremendous save to not give Mexico the chance to dominate. But in the final moments, Pickford played with and threatened their penalty area and took away crosses and set himself up to control the corner position under pressure. Realising they were in trouble, Tuchel brought in Dan Burn and Djed Spence prior to switching to front to back five-man defence. It came to play a pivotal role in eleven hairy moments of extra time. England were courageous defenders and made hard-headed efforts to seal off the Mexican chances as they seemed to be charming. The players have shown the unity and determination needed to excel deep into a world cup and every clear down, block and coin threw was accorded due praise. With the win that comes to them it is with great confidence that England are entering the quarters and in a quasi-awareness that the next challenge is a serious one to face. With their repercussions, the Norwegian captain fawning over Haaland’s prolific goal tally, Norway will be battling for place in the semi-finals. Erling Haaland, who has been named one of the most menacing forwards in world football, was once again responsible for a clinical double to beat Brazil 2-1 to extend their run to the semi-finals, where they will play the all-round hero of the tournament Cristiano Ronaldo. The night was a night of emotions, a night of faith and a night with indelible moments, when the Manchester City striker came ready when his country called and saved Brazil’s campaign and did the same for a blockbuster meeting between his country and ENGLAND. The Vikings of Norway, now led by three-times Champions League winner Haaland, are playing as a strong team and are looking like a real contender for the top prize in football. Brazil were the ones who seemed to have the answer to stop Haaland for the longest time. The move was capped by Gabriel who, as the shout was given on the tackling play, had to keep the Norwegian tight and stall him, making it difficult to get him any chances inside the area. Haaland did not find it easy to pass the ball during the match and he attempted to chase a lot of long balls; certainly not for his own entertainment as he sought to make space for his team mates and runs and runs to others. However, he played only a small role and, as football has amply demonstrated, there is scant need for rare goal scorers to turn a work of sheer art into one of sheer trickery. Finally that moment after 79 minutes came to us. Forced off Gabriel’s boot, Haaland headed past him for the winning goal for Norway. He eliminated all the doubt 11 minutes later with a classy low strike from outside the penalty area which left the Brazil goalkeeper with nothing. It’s something that Haaland has never been particularly effective at producing — but that also came with two chances for two goals and a reminder, once again, of the power in the quality of moments. These statistics are quite truly an amazing story. Skinned in some ways at 13 passes for only 30 touches, Haaland, a forward who on any Wednesday would issue “burner” midfielders a Prime target score, was moderately underpowered.How underpowered was Haaland to be for the average forward – he was 13 passes for 30 touches at the end of the match. He missed an opportunity on clear-cut chances as his expected goals (xG) figure was only 0.39. However, the winner at the end of a football match is not the team in possession  it’s the goals they can score; and Haaland is still getting better at that. His senseless perfection made what was once a close match one of the most shocking of the entire tournament. In another achievement for the brace, Haaland moved to the seven-goal club after going head-to-head, and at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in work for the Golden Boot. His tenure with the Norwegian national team is even more impressive with him averaging one goal for every 71 minutes as a senior national. Of those strikes, only six have come from on the box and it shows just how lethal he has proven to be when out of the box. He has now reached the 14th of his last 14 competitive goals in Norway, an incredible streak of skills which has taken less than two year. The Norwegians’ odyssey has been extraordinary. Scandinavia’s last World Cup was in 1998 and their first qualifying stage at the tournament concluded in the Round of 16. Their arrival in North America was initially with the agenda to make a debut but few saw their way to a historic quarter final until they qualified for North America, where they stormed through the tournament favourite in their quest. That’s a disciplined, fearless side that’s capable of competing with the best in the world, and faith has been proven to help head coach Stale Solbakken get his players what he believes they need the most. The after match celebrations were appropriate to the occasion. Now-legendary Viking Row took place with thousands of Norwegians in Viking attire with red flags in both hands who cheered on from home and beyond, as Haaland and his teammates marched on. The pictures were soon shared all over social media and became a representation of a country that had had one of its biggest sporting moments. The win was more than just qualifying into the next round for many Norwegian diehards – it was the dawn of a new footballing generation that can now take on the world’s great giants. Enormously more complicated than many anticipated is the quarter-final situation England face, now. It was Gareth Southgate’s side who put Mexico down to give them a place in the last eight, but their top priority will be to prevent Haaland’s winner. No one was impressed with the important services he received from the nose, as he has proven this tournament so far that he can make decisions without them. He is capable of punishing even the most robust defence, one mistake, one moment of hesitation and one moment of losing concentration is enough for him to do that. The match was full of controversy, ups and downs in momentum and emotional moments that wouldn’t disappoint two top European football giants. Portugal dominated possession for much of the best part of the first half, neatly passing the basketball into midfield which featured Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao, all hoping to break the protective network at the back of Croatia. Despite all the chance they missed in the initial stages, Croatia were patient and compact and made it difficult for Portugal to play an attacking game as they waited for a chance to strike. Portugal generated more attacking touches, but there was no domination in possession the qualified backline in charge of a well-motivated squad of Croatians proved too strong. After the halftime break the match turned 180 degrees around for the Croatians who found the breakthrough. This time he was able to free through only a certain part of the way, but Ivan Perisic could lash out an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner. The target taken the initiative at the start and instilled in Croatia the confidence that they were moving ahead. Immediately, Igor Matanovic’s skillful finish had created a double advantage for Croatia before the celebrations were short-lived after the assistant referee’s offside call on Nikola Vlasic in the build-up. Rafael Leao emerged as a key player down the wing of attack, prompting Portugal to take action. He curled the ball over the bar before Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to have levelled the scores with a superb chipped finish, before being told he was offside. The Portuguese attack goes on, forcing Croatia further and further home against them and the pressure steadily mounts up. Finally, in the 68th minute, when the referee spotted a ballroom moment in the box with the help of the Video Assistant Referee. Portugal were given the penalty thanks to a corner on Nikola Vlasic when he made contact with Renato Veiga. When Ronaldo was placed in the middle-of-the-table, he trusted in himself and coolly fired the keeper off the right foot. The Portuguese captain proceeded to another incredible numbers landmark for his stellar international career with a start in the World Cup knockout round and finally a knockout-round goal to his name. Croatia tore up the rules on the scoreboard when they lost. Mateo Kovacic got a fine midfield performance and near-rescued the Croatia lead with a superb through ball before Diogo Costa saved Matanovic. Petar Sucic also scored following a brilliant move by the Croats, again the offside flag came into play for Zlatko Dalic’s team. Everything shot at an astounding speed as both teams had been denying each other countless chances in their intent to prolong the contest further as extra time hung in the air long before it began. Contradictions from strategy but now Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has changed a few things in his squad, bringing in fresh-ly rested attack players, with Goncalo Ramos amongst them. The modifications right away brought more freedom to Portugal in the penalty area of the Croatian half and lessened the need for Ronaldo to be the centre point altogether. The game was shaping up for extra time but was soon ended by Josko Gvardiol’s last minute volley as he bundled the ball into the net, after some of that closesmouthed chaos in the Portuguese box. Another long-awaited VAR review however, changed all that. Mario Pasalic was deemed to have come into contact with Igor Matanovic slightly in an offside position from the ball which rubbered against him shortly before it got to Gvardiol. Goal came off resulted in a sad day for the Croats but a joyous one for the Portuguese fans who were part of one of the highlights of the whole tournament. In addition to the football, it was also an emotional evening in Portugal. Although angry after being replaced, Ronaldo took part in the epic win with his teammates. After the match, he dedicated the final whistle to former Portugal international Diogo Jota by carrying his jersey for the team’s celebration during the match, leaving a memorable impression of the tournament. For Croatia, the loss marks the end of another stellar World Cup run and may also be Luka Modric’s last to play on the biggest pitch in the world. The son of the late Swedish goalkeeper Oscar, had an action-packed goal after only four minutes from full-time in Dallas to achieve the breakthrough that saw Norway reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in history. However, the score also creates a tasting competition with Brazil as Haaland plays on with his international goalscoring battery as he did in the past. Norway went into the game with a dream of history on their side, while Ivory Coast went into the match, knowing that they had chances. It was Ivory Coast’s first World Cup knockout game that they had ever played and Norway’s first World cup knockout appearance in 28 years. The significance of the game was seen in the first few minutes – both sides were a bit off the pace and finding it hard to kick up any immediate pressure. Norway finally got the breakthrough six minutes before half-time with the brilliant Antonio Nusa. RB Leipzig front man Martin Odegaard found the winger a well-weighted pass from the left-wing and Odegaard cut inside. The 21-year-old was a stroke of genius with a stunning right-footed strike to the top corner, leaving heaven an empty net for goalkeeper. A moment of pure quality, however, that rewarded Norway for gradually taking over the contest. Towards the 47th minute, however, Ivory Coast with less than normal firepower of Amad Diallo and a defensive 4141 formation looked dangerously unspectacular from the get-go. That restricted their attacking scoring threat over the course of the first 45 minutes and kept the African side chasing the ball for extended periods without creating a ball possession opportunity. They felt comfortable dealing with the narrow lead and with the first half winding down, they were in a commanding position. It was a shootout after the break though, when Amad Diallo came in. The Manchester United playmaker was instantly making the Isi-queen look lithe and creative as he brought a lot of speed and directness to the game’s attacking arsenal. Amad made a crucial defense effort by scooping over the goal line a volley close up from Torbjorn Heggem, leaving his side alive for an eventual goal. The pressure finally bore in the 74th minute as Amad unleashed one of his best goals of the tournament. Retrieving the ball from the right, he played his way past two Norwegian defenders to sin herethe point expertly. It was a very good solo performance that definitely revealed just what Ivory Coast needed during the first hour. But everything changed abruptly and overtime was becoming more of a reality when the Sunderlands were playing with renewed faith on the continent. It was just that there was always one player who could make a difference and that was Norway. But that’s the kind of work an elite striker doesn’t need to have large numbers of go-getters and shots before leaving his mark. Patrick Berg was working the ball well before he successfully put a Berg past into the penalty after dangerously cutting back over the member into the area with a very little time on the clock. Haaland was quickest to respond as the ball rebounded into the six-yard area but unexpectedly came off-hael and sent a Norwegian high-heeled horde into a frenzy of celebration. Haaland then bowled over three individuals in one goal in order to stretch his brilliant spell to 13 matches, proving once more that he is a mainstay on the larger stages of football. Odegaard was fantastic with his beautiful opening day-kicker and Nusa stole the show in the middle, but it was Haaland who really put in the big play when Norway needed him. After conceding the late one, Ivory Coast refused to give away. Amad was almost one yard clear of the penalty area during stoppage time but was beaten down by Norway’s Orjan Nyland, who saved for the rest of the time to maintain his team’s crucial win. A perfect conclusion to an entertaining match with displays of grit and brilliance from some of the players. It is a major success for Norwegian football as they become the first team to win a World Cup knock-out game. It was another fine tournament from Martin Odegaard as he claimed another point, with his magnificent goal and all-round brilliance means Antonio Nusa quite rightly won the Player of the Match prize. Now, however, it is time for Norway to face into a larger task as they will be facing Brazil in the Round of 16. Norway will feel secure in the knowledge Haaland is in supreme form – and after being granted an improbable and historic victory, they will have faith in their man. France scored two more memorable goals on their way to the Round of 16 against Sweden (3-0) with Kylian Mbappe’s brilliance showing. The French forward registered two goals in New Jersey, making him the top goal scorer in FIFA World Cup knockout games with 10 goals, upstaging Ronaldo, the top scorer in Brazil’s knockout games. His latest masterclass also sees him level with Lionel Messi on six goals to lead the Golden Boot race, further indicating him as one of the biggest names on the field this tournament. France took all three group games to the knockout stage and they didn’t delay in proving that they are one of the big favourites to rake in the trophies. Despite the pounding beat, Didier Deschamps’s men had on their own much more control, and made their way through the thickets in hauling in many passes and loading the defence with speed and movement which Sweden should have been controlling. Mbappe played nearly perfectly alongside Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola who were brilliant together.Sweden had little recovery time as the combination of Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola got to the ball and did it brilliantly with Mbappe. The first phase was fully French. Mbappe was hopeful of putting his side ahead but the flag of his assistant referee led to the move being played offside. Jules Kounde was quickly followed by a high-risk low cross into the area but Mbappe hit the post with the goal in his pocket. France maintained the pressure while Michael Olise broke free and was within inches of bringing the ball home with an amazing scissor-kick that went up on the tall. However, Sweden keeper Jacob Zetterstrom (Widell) made a number of good saves to keep his side in the game. France looked for the breakthrough, finding no one better than Dembele and Olise, who he denied more than once. The opposition did finally taste defeat about half-way through, though, when Dembele got a fine cross to Mbappe. The skipper unhurriedly had Viktor Gyokeres sent wide with a deft stepover, then calmly laid a controlled finish into the far corner, giving France the lead which it well deserved. In the best of luck for Sweden, they got the shot after the restart and Elliot Stroud missed a shot from practically point-blank range, but the ball had helped him out. The missed opportunity costed dearly as France then completely dominated the contest. After an excellent through ball from Olise, Bradley Barcola doubled the lead after eight minutes of the second half, netting a long-range strike into the near post. France had the ball a lot and made fantastic chances by the underhand side of the area. In what was another of Dembele’s famous skills, he danced around into the back of the net, forcing another superb save from Widell Zetterstrom, while Olise saw a 1v1 save denied with another slick attack for Dembele’s side. France just couldn’t be stopped as they methodically went around the Swedish defence, hitting with Mbappe, Dembele and Olise in constant pressure. Mbappe kicked his sensational evening off in the 74th minute. Again, the delivery from Olise was just right to crack the Swedish defence as Mbappe turned into a perfectly-weighted position for a fine finish over the blind side of the keeper. Apart from helping France win the game, it meant Mbappe was a top 10 scorer in the World Cup knockout era. This was another outstanding achievement by the Real Madrid attacker and he’s resetting the football world’s record, one goal at a time. Yet, Olise was as much of a catalyst in the game as he was to walk away with the Player of the Match accolade which was fittingly bestowed upon him following two assists and setting up a number of opportunities throughout the contest. The alliance with Mbappe is still in its prime and Barcola and Dembele supplied the pace, creativity and intelligent movement, which enabled France to make the attack almost impossible to handle. France were also solid and disciplined on the far end of the park. Mike Maignan was the only man between the posts on the rebound as Viktor Gyokeres sailed wide with just time on the clock, although he denied Maidens’ goalkeeper. For much of the evening, the French defence seemed no cause for concern, and handled the retreating Swedish attacks most of the time. With the win, France have retained their unbeaten World Cup run that’s now extended to four matches and boosted their lead as one of the tournament’s top favourites. Not only have they added attacking football of a very high standard but their understanding between the trio of Mbappe, Olise and Dembele, as well as their correspondence with Barcola, is also getting better by the moment. Didier Deschamps’ team is one of the most well rounded in the tournament because it’s a pretty good mix of defenders and attackers. This leaves France heading to Paraguay in the Round of 16 following a penalty shootout with the South American team dispatching Germany from last June’s competition. If Mbappe can keep going out here, France will be able to rest easy about their World Cup run. History is still being made by their captain, and as their team is improving match-by-match, Les Bleus could well be on track to take another World Cup.
