But the three goals and the four goal lead they gave up made it clear that Xabi Alonso has a lot more to do if Chelsea are serious about threatening the Premier League for first place. Martinez wasn’t given chance to influence a team after just one full training session with his new team-mates before he was shunted into the starting XI. For someone to appear comfortable in unusual circumstances is no mean feat, especially for someone who didn’t score Brighton’s three goals. It was also a big move from Robert Sanchez’s series of performances with the stakes on the table against Fulham where the goalkeeper was given much criticism for his involvement in the goals admitted by his team. Chelsea had a poor game in ball ownership against Brighton as they only managed to hold the ball for 25.9%. They managed only 146 passes, the fewest since they opened the season’s Premier League match against Sunderland in Sunderland’s lead-up to the game.This was their lowest number of passes since the introduction of the Premier League in 2003-04. Those numbers can’t be ignored for a team with an eye on the top of the table. A goalkeeper can save, organise and lead his defence but he can’t replace midfielders whose job is a lackadaisical one. That has now become even more complicated thanks to the absence of Enzo Fernandez. Unfortunately, yet for the second consecutive game, Fernandez missed him last match as Manchester City was reportedly interested, especially as a move could cost over £120m. In the meantime, Moises Caicedo’s fitness was also a concern as he was pushed of after just 11 minutes came off. That meant a unique midfield set up for Chelsea. Injured star Jordan Henderson was unavailable, and Mo Malo Gusto, Romeo Lavia were the ones who operated at the center. Apparently Barco was also not trusted to get onto the pitch to start a Premier League game yet. There was a lack of protection in front of the defence which was a factor in why Chelsea found themselves exposed. Alonso was also forced to travel forward to a back four as opposed to the front four, leaving Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix and Levi Colwill vulnerable in spots throughout his time out on the park. There’s also a set-work issue. If Chelsea are to have ambitions of competing with the Premier League’s best, they simply can’t provide repeated opportunities from dead ball scenarios. They were frequently up against a grinder against Brighton and when they were in control the Nelson Reds proved to be a challenge. There are, however, lots of reasons to withhold my complaint. The attack looks threatening with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro able to create and finish chances. Chelsea don’t just score goals at the rate that wins matches, they also manage to make them at times when they fail to defend themselves adequately. However, there is no expectation that he will revolutionise the defence in one day. Last but not least, it’s the balance that Alonso must strike between attacking firepower and defence that will be demanded from him. Preliminary results are promising, with the team having posted league win after league victory but that’s not enough for title contenders. They require consistency, control and they must be able to close a game down from the opposition. Chelsea are good enough to play the up-tackling game this season. Martinez will be plugging the final bulge but for Alonso to have any hope of making Chelsea a downbeat Premier League contender, things really have to

The Portuguese midfielder didn’t just hunt for his own goals, he also went out of his way to bring the chipped ball to him, to get his teammates headed in the right direction and to move forwards. The pinnacle was when United got the penalty. It was no different when Fernandes came in to the Stretford End and put United 3-1 up. The finish was a particularly important one because that’s the second penalty he was missing in pre-season and there was another “weight on the puck”. On the contrary, those ones didn’t seem to have an impact on him; rather, he was demonstrating the same kind of mindset that United have had the entire time he was at the club. He remained calm and found a gap and went past the keeper. 10 minutes later the captain made his hat trick, marking him the first captain in club history to do so. For Manchester United it was his third hat-trick of the season and the 15th of his career and it was a further sign of his uncanny talent for effecting the outcome of a match almost entirely. To add to his collection he may well have scored a further crazy effort by Fernandes from some distance out of the box soon after the restart when Ipswich lost control. The goalkeeper lived to tell about it with the ball on top of the goal! Carrick was someone who simply couldn’t ignore Fernandes. Having the midfielder in front has always been a main priority for the United head coach and the display here again serves to remind him of why the tall blue is the heart and soul of their plans. But, the future of Fernandes at Old Trafford is a real one for discussion. The 31-year-old will be up for a contract extension at Manchester United, but his final year is nearing its end. There has been interest from clubs abroad, though it seems unlikely to happen this month. The larger question though remains, is United to engage in Fernandes as the signings they have made are costlier than the player they would sacrifice in the interests of maximizing profit. Fernandes’ role on recent occasions cannot be underestimated, but right now it’s Rashford’s turn to hold that distinction. He provided Premier League tally-leading 21 assists last season as United climbed back into the Champions League after a two-year hiatus. Former United side player Ashley Young reiterated Brown’s comments, stating that Fernandes was the player to make Manchester United “tick”. It is based on the view of many supporters that United would not only miss out on goals and assists without Fernandes, but also be lacking in leadership, energy and creativity. The last throw of the ball was interesting. If Fernandes is already discussing a technical aspect with the substitute Benjamin Sesko, then it wasn’t until he’d given welcome to Ipswich players and officials that he discussed anything else. Then he noticed that he’d neglected to pick up the match ball and had to go around to the side and pick it up for his hat trick. That little moment encapsulates a bit of Fernandes. After scoring three goals and being victorious 5-2, his mind was still on the next pass, the next move and the next improvement. It’s also a great addition to the list for Carrick, who has a lot to grow by with that one. The United party had begun their game in a poor manner and their reply was the expression of character. Mourinho is alleged to have let the legendary United manager know that he made a promise he couldn’t break in regards to the Chelsea agreement. France, who dominated the ball from the first whistle, made no mistake as they set the tempo and set the play. Morocco were unable to match the speed, any ferocity and inventive power of the French attack and spent much of the match in their own half of the field. France gathered multiple opportunities in the first 45 minutes, but couldn’t break through until after the deadline. Mbappe, who had seen a previous penalty saved, had the best of intentions with his first shot and netted the opening goal which saved a penalty earlier. Of course, his willpower brought out his importance in world football. The game was still only minutes old and the Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele finished it off minutes later with a second for France to make it all but impossible for the Moroccans to recover. France were undoubtedly on top with one goal in the 42 games played African side offered only one inside the penalty area. Spain are in the final eight, while Portugal have been left with questions as they flame out of the competition. The first kick came and it had huge significance for both teams. Spain enjoyed some possession over extended periods and appeared more at home with the ball, while Portugal looked for goals in the Brazilian striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. Everything was competitive all day long with both defences organised and limiting for clear opportunities. Portugal held their own well but eventually got to attacking Spain one side and Spain the other side looked the more dangerous. But it was Cristiano Ronaldo who, again and this time more than ever, took centre stage. Since the Belgian had started the game, he was 41 but had started nearly the whole 90 minutes and failed to make his presence felt like he did in the past. Ronaldo was able to find himself in front of the goal only a couple of times and also never within Spain’s penalty area. Leading and experienced as ever, even after emerging from the recent tie, Portugal had great difficulty getting going but Spain dominated the play the whole time. Again, doubts were raised as to whether Portugal could have found younger attacking players for such a crucial knockout game. It was a moment at the death deep in the final injury time. Spain persevered and another Spaniard, Mikel Merino, found the breakthrough, sending the Spaniards and fans into a frenzy. However, Portugal were on a tight schedule to react and when the whistle went there went they too. While leaving the field as the winners, Ronaldo got teared up as he realized the end of his World Cup dream had come to an end. Ronaldo’s WM career may be over but his accomplishments are unmatched in many aspects. He has scored six different World Cups, and concluded his career with 11 World Cup goals. He has left another chapter close in what has been a turbulent patch for Portugal as they start to sketch their future. Some football pundits, especially, had many questions on Portugal’s tactics in the tournament. Some thought that Goncalo Ramos could have been a bigger weapon in the attack, while others thought Portugal was too Watson heavy this season. Belgian elimination will take them to a World Cup music history-game with the Spaniards, and the USA are done with World Cup aspirations. Belgium had a great opening and were a threat from the off. They played fast, had good space and threw the American defence onto the ropes by providing themselves with plenty of space and by passing to their best forwards and backwards. They were fortunate with their early dominance when Nicolas Raskin was able to cross the six yard box in the ninth minute. Charles De Ketelaere struck the ball home on time for an early hit to give Belgium the lead. Brilliant easy finish, it was a sign of the attacking quality of Belgium. It was not until the second half, when the USA had regained possession, that they were able to take charge of this match.Belgium dominated before the USA could get used to the game, and take charge during the second half. The home side got back into the game in the 31st minute. Paul Scholes’ brainchild – Malik Tillman took up the role of taking a free-kick, though it was heavily deflected and burried Thibaout Courtois to gain goals. The equaliser brought some joy and for a few moments took the ball from the Englishman’s hands. But Belgium quickly reacted. Two minutes later Leandro Trossard flew in a fine cross which was headed over the rising De Ketelaere for the net. The belated reply demoralized USA and put Belgium in control until halftime. The second semi was all Belgium. They were patient, in possession and waited for another chance to take revenge at the American defense. It was when goalkeeper Matt Freese stepped in to play the ball out from the back and stumbled on his shot. De Ketelaere brought him down, recovered the loose ball and it just went to Hans Vanaken who shot it perfectly outside the box in the empty net. That was the expensive error for USA that ended any other possibility for any other comeback. Belgium produced opportunities throughout, while attack was lacking from the United States throughout. Folarin Balogun made his comeback to the Ayrshire squad in place of the suspended player after the Italian football federation lifted their one-match suspension, but Balogun’s pace and creativity was not enough against the sharp Belgian defence. He did, however, have one final chance late in the game in a tight angle, which Courtois made comfortable. Belgium’s midfield did not seem to suffer from such a lack of confidence either with Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Gio Reyna struggling to make a mark. But Romelu Lukaku could yet make his impact this time. The veteran club striker came off the bench in stoppage time and retrieved the ball in the box and completed his penalty goalkeeper-side to a comfortable 4-1 lead. Lukaku’s goal also gave him another hat trick for the number one man to score substitutes three times in one FIFA World Cup tournament. His concluding efforts did the rest which highlighted Belgium’s depth of talent. It also fulfilled the final hope of the remaining co-host country to raise the World Cup flags. The USA eliminated after Canada and Mexico had already been losers, as had also been eliminated in the Round of 16. Belgium were one of the better sides this tournament, but had their moments of promise, particularly in one of their biggest fixtures in the past few years. Once the intensity of the game began to ramp up in the face of fervent home support, everything was set for England to slick on the st busiest part of the evening.The host-club had no reason to be on hold because the toughest spell of the game was still to come as the players stepped up in front of their very own, passionate fans. Realising they were in trouble, Tuchel brought in Dan Burn and Djed Spence prior to switching to front to back five-man defence. It came to play a pivotal role in eleven hairy moments of extra time. England were courageous defenders and made hard-headed efforts to seal off the Mexican chances as they seemed to be charming. The players have shown the unity and determination needed to excel deep into a world cup and every clear down, block and coin threw was accorded due praise. With the win that comes to them it is with great confidence that England are entering the quarters and in a quasi-awareness that the next challenge is a serious one to face. The night was a night of emotions, a night of faith and a night with indelible moments, when the Manchester City striker came ready when his country called and saved Brazil’s campaign and did the same for a blockbuster meeting between his country and ENGLAND. The Vikings of Norway, now led by three-times Champions League winner Haaland, are playing as a strong team and are looking like a real contender for the top prize in football. However, he played only a small role and, as football has amply demonstrated, there is scant need for rare goal scorers to turn a work of sheer art into one of sheer trickery. Finally that moment after 79 minutes came to us. Forced off Gabriel’s boot, Haaland headed past him for the winning goal for Norway. He eliminated all the doubt 11 minutes later with a classy low strike from outside the penalty area which left the Brazil goalkeeper with nothing. It’s something that Haaland has never been particularly effective at producing — but that also came with two chances for two goals and a reminder, once again, of the power in the quality of moments. His tenure with the Norwegian national team is even more impressive with him averaging one goal for every 71 minutes as a senior national. Of those strikes, only six have come from on the box and it shows just how lethal he has proven to be when out of the box. He has now reached the 14th of his last 14 competitive goals in Norway, an incredible streak of skills which has taken less than two year. The Norwegians’ odyssey has been extraordinary. Now-legendary Viking Row took place with thousands of Norwegians in Viking attire with red flags in both hands who cheered on from home and beyond, as Haaland and his teammates marched on. The pictures were soon shared all over social media and became a representation of a country that had had one of its biggest sporting moments. The win was more than just qualifying into the next round for many Norwegian diehards – it was the dawn of a new footballing generation that can now take on the world’s great giants. Enormously more complicated than many anticipated is the quarter-final situation England face, now. It was Gareth Southgate’s side who put Mexico down to give them a place in the last eight, but their top priority will be to prevent Haaland’s winner. No one was impressed with the important services he received from the nose, as he has proven this tournament so far that he can make decisions without them. Portugal vs Croatia was one of the most detailed and spectacular matchups of the FIFA World Cup with Goncalo Ramos finding a perfect opportunity to make the big difference at the last minute. Cristiano Ronaldo also became a World Cup legend with his first-ever World Cup knockout-goal and Croatia found its heartbreak with a VAR review rules out last-gasp equality. The match was full of controversy, ups and downs in momentum and emotional moments that wouldn’t disappoint two top European football giants. Portugal dominated possession for much of the best part of the first half, neatly passing the basketball into midfield which featured Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao, all hoping to break the protective network at the back of Croatia. Despite all the chance they missed in the initial stages, Croatia were patient and compact and made it difficult for Portugal to play an attacking game as they waited for a chance to strike. Portugal generated more attacking touches, but there was no domination in possession the qualified backline in charge of a well-motivated squad of Croatians proved too strong. After the halftime break the match turned 180 degrees around for the Croatians who found the breakthrough. This time he was able to free through only a certain part of the way, but Ivan Perisic could lash out an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner. The target taken the initiative at the start and instilled in Croatia the confidence that they were moving ahead. Immediately, Igor Matanovic’s skillful finish had created a double advantage for Croatia before the celebrations were short-lived after the assistant referee’s offside call on Nikola Vlasic in the build-up. Rafael Leao emerged as a key player down the wing of attack, prompting Portugal to take action. He curled the ball over the bar before Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to have levelled the scores with a superb chipped finish, before being told he was offside. The Portuguese attack goes on, forcing Croatia further and further home against them and the pressure steadily mounts up. Finally, in the 68th minute, when the referee spotted a ballroom moment in the box with the help of the Video Assistant Referee. Portugal were given the penalty thanks to a corner on Nikola Vlasic when he made contact with Renato Veiga. When Ronaldo was placed in the middle-of-the-table, he trusted in himself and coolly fired the keeper off the right foot. The Portuguese captain proceeded to another incredible numbers landmark for his stellar international career with a start in the World Cup knockout round and finally a knockout-round goal to his name. Croatia tore up the rules on the scoreboard when they lost. Mateo Kovacic got a fine midfield performance and near-rescued the Croatia lead with a superb through ball before Diogo Costa saved Matanovic. Petar Sucic also scored following a brilliant move by the Croats, again the offside flag came into play for Zlatko Dalic’s team. Everything shot at an astounding speed as both teams had been denying each other countless chances in their intent to prolong the contest further as extra time hung in the air long before it began. Contradictions from strategy but now Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has changed a few things in his squad, bringing in fresh-ly rested attack players, with Goncalo Ramos amongst them. The modifications right away brought more freedom to Portugal in the penalty area of the Croatian half and lessened the need for Ronaldo to be the centre point altogether. Ronaldo managed to look frustrated when he was brought on late in the game but it finally did not look like it was. Another long-awaited VAR review however, changed all that. Mario Pasalic was deemed to have come into contact with Igor Matanovic slightly in an offside position from the ball which rubbered against him shortly before it got to Gvardiol. Goal came off resulted in a sad day for the Croats but a joyous one for the Portuguese fans who were part of one of the highlights of the whole tournament. In addition to the football, it was also an emotional evening in Portugal. Although angry after being replaced, Ronaldo took part in the epic win with his teammates. After the match, he dedicated the final whistle to former Portugal international Diogo Jota by carrying his jersey for the team’s celebration during the match, leaving a memorable impression of the tournament. For Croatia, the loss marks the end of another stellar World Cup run and may also be Luka Modric’s last to play on the biggest pitch in the world. Croatia battled Portugal for much of the game and will be disappointed that good margins – in the VARs’ decisions above all – sealed their doom.
