Yuvraj Singh has been appointed as the assistant and batting coach of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027, for the first time, the former India allrounder will take up this role as a coach. He’ll train with head coach Sourav Ganguly in what is expected to be a strengthening of the coaching setup of the franchise to beat their targets for the Indian Premier League 2018. The choice invests the duo with one of the country’s most famous names, which are two of the greatest influences that have been instrumental in India’s triumph at the international platform.
Delhi Capitals officially announced the signing of Yuvraj on the heels of news reports that he would join the franchise in a high-level role in June. Ganguly was given the nod as head coach the previous week after some changes were set to be made in the management of the franchise.Ganguly was announced as the head coach the previous week following the franchise’s change in management after Hemang Badani was removed from this role.
The changes come on a deal between Delhi Capitals co-owner GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports regarding the operational control of the franchise which is going to alternate between the two in two-year cycles. This came in the wake of IPL 2024 and the management of the IPL franchise has been readying for the season of 2027.
Yuvraj was very psyched about joining Delhi Capitals and said how he has had a long association with the franchise and how glad he is that he has to work with Ganguly. The former Indian all-rounder was excited to be a part of a great team and help them achieve great success.
Dada will again be working with Yuvraj this time on the coaching bench and he is glad about that as well, Yuvraj said in a statement issued by the franchise. The role of coach was something he was passionate about, he added, and said it was an exciting opportunity.
It is a new dimension that the partnership with Ganguly brings in at the Delhi Capitals. Ganguly, the former India captain who revolutionised the side’s thinking in international cricket, will head the coaching staff while Yuvraj will deal with batting aspects and help in the team preparation. They’ve gone through the heights of play at the most competitive level, which could come in handy for developing younger players and creating a competitive team for the franchise.
Delhi Capitals’ co-owner and chairman Parth Jindal hailed from his abilities to win matches and to guide the growing crop of Indian cricketers. Jindal emphasized on the experience of Jindal, his winning mentality and the fact that he can communicate with players which can prove useful for the team.
While it is Yuvraj’s first-ever coaching job, he has already made his mark as a coach for young bats. A number of players from India have attributed him to being influential in their growth journey as a Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh have done so. His pressure handling ability and experience with big tournaments might come in handy in the IPL.
Yuvraj also had a stint at the Delhi Capitals’ jersey as he played with the team in the 2015 season. He was the most expensive player to be acquired by the franchise at the time in the previous campaign, when it was made as per INR 16 crore. He started out his career in the lineup and played 14 games, piled up 248 runs and netted one wicket.
In his IPL career, Yuvraj’s touches of the ball totalled 2750 runs and he picked up 36 wickets in 132 matches. His ability to perform with both the ball and the bat led to him being one of the most recognisable allround cricketers in Indian cricket, and his aggressive weapons produced and ability to impact big matches earned him the reputation of a big game player. He then retired from all types of cricket in 2019.
The appointment brings an opportunity for Delhi Capitals to get both Yuvraj’s game and Glasgow ganguly’s leadership as both won turned heads in great tournaments. The franchise will wish that they will be able to offer a robust setting to their existing talent and fresh ones who are aspiring for a cricket league ahead of the IPL 2027.
Now with the new coaching outfit being put in place the time will be for squad planning and preparations for next season. It will take time to see if Yuvraj will make an impact as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals, but his recruitment is an exciting development as the franchise steps up its bid to become a contender for the IPL final.
