Virat Kohli added another big chapter to his ODI career as he broke a few records during India’s maiden encounter against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. His century came at a faster pace of 15,000 runs from 100 innings than any batsman in the history of ODI cricket and he has also debuted Sachin Tendulkar’s record for career hundreds in List A cricket.
With this innings by Kohli, he has now crossed the 15,000-run milestone in 303 ODI innings, which is faster than Tendulkar’s 377 innings. He has also passed the milestone in lesser balls as he played only 15,950 deliveries to tendulkar who played 17,528.
But Tendulkar hit 15,000 runs in less number of days after eating his sweets for his first ODI. The fact that Kohli got into the spirit was not merely about his length of career in the international arena but also how fast he was able to score and how many innings it took him.
With their final 15,080 ODI runs, Kohli became only India’s second batter to post 15,000 in the tournament. 27 other players have the 18,426 ODI runs to close in on Tendulkar.Tendulkar is the only guy who has just 27 others chasing 18,426 ODI runs.
It was one of the impressive Benjis first 100, or rather 100 glorious runs. He scored his century in 74 balls and became the third fastest ODI century for the Odisha skipper of his career.
He reached 100 on 52 and 61 balls in 2013, in two faster hundred innings in his career against Australia. It was also the beginning of the century, and it took Kohli to the 60 hundreds mark to even Kohli himself with Tendulkar in the List A cricket format. Another big moment for a career that has already had plenty of runs.
Kohli has been superb in form against West Indies too. His ODI 100 scored in Thiruvananthapuram was his 10th ODI century against Sri Lanka, tying his record held with them.
Initially, it was yet a big turning point in Kohli’s Indian record. He is the first player to score 7 thousand runs in the country in the ODI format.
With his total of 7,006 runs in ODIs for India, he surpassed Tendulkar’s record of 6,976 runs.
Kohli’s feat was graced by the speed at which he has gathered his latest 1,000 ODI runs. Having scored 14000 runs, he has posted a strike rate of 107.93, which is his best 1000-run span in ODI cricket.
This is his lowest 1,000-run block since the third of his career, when he has hit just 84.32 runs.It took Kohli only 16 innings to move from 14,000 to 15,000 ODI runs. In the same time period, he played 11 fifty-plus games and hit five hundreds.
He also set another record with his nine sixes off the ball with West Indies. It was the most sixes Kohli had found in an inning in a single ODI, a tally which has surpassed his previous record of 8 against Sri Lanka back in 2023.
He also set a record for the Indian batter against West Indies in ODI for having the most sixes (9) in the game. Overcame Rohit Sharma who made eight sixes against them in Guwahati over the previous occasion in 2018.
Thiruvananthapuram has also been a special place for Kohli as he is the mentor for the players. He has ripped up 338 runs without getting the wicket down in three ODI innings at the ground.
That is the most runs scored in an ODI match in such a condition that no batsman was caught in the innings in a particular place. He is also in the top two among bowlers for maximum runs between dismissals from a single venue in ODIs after Fakhar Zaman’s 455 runs for Bulawayo.
Kohli was not the only Indians batsman to cross an important milestone in the game. Shubman Gill picked up his 10th ODI century in as many innings.
That gives Gill the edge as the fastest Indian to cross the 10 ODI hundred mark with the previous record set by Shikhar Dhawan ranking 77 innings. Gill, along with Fakhar Zaman is also the third fastest to reach the milestone overall.
India also had a memorable record for bowlers with the help of who they made an impressive record. Kuldeep Yadav extended his 11 under 12 four wicket figure string in ODIs, as he tied Ajit Agarkar’s second-most 12 wickets rack up by an Indian bowler.
Mohammed Shami is still one ahead with 16 four-plus wickets to his name.
But Kohli’s most remarkable achievement was another ODI record. Having every game closely monitored, he is slowly but surely making his profile a strong match for the greatest names to qualify in the format.
His record setting innings in India, 60th List A hundred and 15000 runs mark made the Thiruvananthapuram ODI a memorable feat in Kohli’s career.
