Although Vowles has been very confident that six days of running in Bahrain will be adequate, the actual competitive scenario will only come into full picture when the Williams start racing against the rest of the grid. No one, even Vowles himself, really knows what position they are in when heading to the opening race.

It is patience, years of turmoil behind it, pragmatism, having made many mistakes costly, and the faith that gradual improvement can still have its dividends in a sport that lives by marginal gains.
