F1 2026 Bahrain Pre-Season Test had an early warning by McLaren with Lando Norris leading day one, as the two drivers took part in a little battle in the opening session of the Bahrain International Circuit. Although Norris won the timesheets by only 0.129 seconds it was Verstappen quietly reminding Red Bull of its stamina by finishing more laps than any other driver, indicating that the struggle to emerge as the ultimate winner in the new era of Formula 1 is already a closely contested one.
To begin with, the attention was automatically deflected towards McLaren. The total of the morning session was 54 laps with the 1m35.602s from Oscar Piastri who set a strong mark before driving Norris. Later Norris set a quick 1m34.669s lap in the afternoon or the quickest of the day and completed 58 laps, which made McLaren reach 112 for mileage. That was more than a complete Bahrain race distance and an indication of good early reliability of the MCL40.
But lap times on the first day of the F1 2026 Bahrain pre-season test were not the whole story. It was a green track with winds blowing and numerous vehicles were running aerodynamic gaugers. At Turn 10, some drivers had off-track incidences and were commonly accredited to tailwinds and different braking maneuvers with the novel energy deployment systems. It curbed me to the idea that testing is just as much data collection as it is sheer pace.
In the meantime, the Red Bull RB22 of Verstappen made an impression in another way. The Dutchman was the fastest in the morning recording a time of 1m35.433s and then reduced it to 1m34.798s in one of the late soft-tyre runs. More importantly, he recorded 136 laps; the best of any of the drivers which was a testimony of great dependability. It was observed that Red Bull seemed to be able to use electrical power throughout in several laps, which she was possibly stronger with the hybrid systems.
Ferrari also had a good start at the pre-season test in the F1 2026 in Bahrain. Charles Leclerc had the third-fastest time of 0.521 seconds behind Norris and that made 80 laps. Lewis Hamilton who was going to still be integrated into the Scudery set up himself ranked seventh overall after the 52 laps in the morning. The Italian costume was approachable instead of attention seeking.
In other places, Haas was solidly within the context, with Esteban Ocon fulfilling 115 laps, who only Verstappen surpassed in not the biggest time possible. With questions of power unit development that continued to press the company, Mercedes remained relatively low-profile. George Russell was able to complete 56 laps with a gap of more than a second behind Norris to set the record, and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli ran on longer distances with harder compounds.
There were setbacks. In the AMR26, Aston Martin finished only 36 laps because the team claimed that it was because of a data anomaly associated to the Honda power unit. Among the more unfortunate reliability stories of the day was the cutting of Lance Stroll running after lunch.
Williams on the other hand regained his composure after failing to take previous shakedown opportunities. Carlos Sainz completed 77 laps in the morning and Alex Albon completed 68 laps in the afternoon. The updated side pod style of the Audi also attracted attention, but when Nico Hulkenberg came to a stop, it was temporarily red flagged and then the car continued running.
Lastly, Cadillac unveiled its ultimate livery with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez sharing the workload equaling 107 laps. There were small interruptions in the Alpine and Racing Bulls that gained a good amount of mileage prior to the remaining days of the test.
The F1 2026 Bahrain pre-season test finally proved to give a series of pre-season suggestions instead of concrete resolutions. McLaren displayed speed on the one lap, Red Bull expressed endurance and consistency and Ferrari was in a striking range. As additional two days of testing savor up, teams will switch their priorities on: instead of exploratory runs, they will switch to performance simulation being more representative.
Day one was any indication that the 2026 season would be another tough season on the front. Norris could have bledded first, but the doggedness of Verstappen in terms of mileage indicates that this is not a war that is over.
