PBKS vs CSK: Iyer, Arya Power Stunning Chase

PBKS vs CSK provided another thriller at Chepauk however, the script reversed as usual- PBKS got once again to chase down a daunting goal and Chennai Super Kings were looking for answers. With a match full of explosive batting changing of the momentum, and the tactical failure, PBKS demonstrated why they are arguably the most fearless chasing side in the league. This game had a bit, that Ayush Mhatre shone at the top, Sarfaraz Khan late in the flourish and last but not the least calculated aggression of Shreyas Iyer and Priyansh Arya, which a fan of T20 would desire.

The Chennai Super Kings appeared to be in command through most parts of their match, and this was due to Ayush Mhatre delivering a composed but aggressive innings. Mhatre, who batted at the No. 3 position, had complete utilization of the powerplay, exhibiting both technical and intentional skill. He could change, evolve and adapt, be it in sending fuller deliveries down mid-on or in going by to take short balls in the quickest possible manner with a pull ball full of confidence. His 73 off 43 balls supported CSK in this innings and it came when the rest of the team was not able to continue with momentum.

Nevertheless, the intermediate period revealed some issues. Shivam Dube had trouble accelerating in the beginning and the innings soon lost its path. That was when Sarfaraz Khan was brought in and the tempo was totally altered. His 32 out of the 12 balls was not only effective, but it was swashbuckling. Sarfaraz played creative strokes against pace, spin and made sure that CSK squeaked over 200 and scored at a competitive 209 out of 5. That was supposed to be sufficiently at Chepauk. However, with PBKS, enough is not enough.

Punjab Kings were not hot on the heels but aggressive. Priyansh Arya established the mood early enough, shredding the CSK bowling attack with cautionless strokes. With PBKS scoring 33 only 9 balls, Arya had raced to 33 by the time the PBKS were scoring 3 in the fourth over. It was not wild swinging, but thought-out violence supported by incredible bat speed and swagger.

The 39 hits of Arya can appear to be a cameo on the paper but in the real sense it was the burst of fire that changed the tide of the game. He could do anything to find limits that ruined the plan of bowling by CSK and left them at the back foot. The powerplay had already made the target cut down to a large piece by the time of the play concluding, so the remainder of the chase became considerably less daunting.

CSK had still got a chance to recover the match despite the explosive beginning. Two wickets (one of them a run-out and the other a soft dismissal) caused a pressure between the ninth and twelfth overs. The game was at that point well evened out.

It was at that point that Shreyas Iyer came in. He began his cautiously starting on 4 of 5 balls, but was speedily changing up when it was most necessary. On a vital over, Shreyas faced Rahul Chahar with a significant challenge to deal with, but made two sixes totally changing the tide towards PBKS. It was then under his precise and skillful control, and he swung the chase along, limiting and marking boundaries as they dotted and fell upon him.

It was not his 50 that came off only 26 balls, but his timing and leadership. He took the strain, established the weak points, and performed flawlessly. Assisted by the middle order, PBKS pursued the 210 leaving five wickets behind to strengthen their chase image as experts.

This loss is very serious to Chennai Super Kings. Although they batted well in a pitch that was conducive to their batting, they did not deliver again with their bowling. The powerplay was uncontrollable and the inability to control violent batters such as Arya was costly.

This defeat is also their fourth straight loss to PBKS in Chepauk, a place that was even regarded as fortress by them. What is more so is that CSK have not even scored a single goal in two games this season. They have a strong batting unit, but their bowling department requires immediate intervention in case they want to recover.

The unpredictability and excitement of T20 cricket was again witnessed in PBKS vs CSK. The fearless attitude of Punjab Kings in their pursuit of the target is still defining the manner in which the target is pursued in IPL. Conversely, CSK needs to re-strategize and work on their bowling problems to prevent losing the season. According to this match, it is not just that PBKS are contenders, but statement-makers.
