One of the most dramatic innings in IPL history was created by Tilak Varma, who transformed the initial frustration into a pure devastation after Gujarat Titans were clobbered by the Mumbai Indians using one century. What started as a nervous stay at the crease evolved to a stunning unbeaten 101 with only 45 balls cocking MI off the hook to dominance in totality in IPL 2026.
The emotional extremes of T20 cricket are epitomised in this innings. Tilak Varma went the wrong way initially as he crawled through 19 in 22 deliveries when Mumbai Indians were battling after losing its three players in six overs. At this point, the innings seemed to be halted, the batter seemed strained and Gujarat Titans seemed to have the upper hand.
First, the responsibility and not freedom as portrayed by Tilak in his early approach. MI in distress, he made an effort to create again, turning sideways and never endangering himself. But there was no flow apparently. Even boundary opportunities were untimely, and frustration was evident.
In the case of Tilak Varma this was over 100 years. It was an affirmation of trust, tolerance, and faith. He could take pressure when things were tough after which he would remove order to create mayhem when the time came.
Mumbai Indians are now certain that they have a match-winner back in rhythm. Competitors are now informed of the same.
In case this is the turning point of the MI campaign, IPL 2026 will not forget this night as Tilak Varma catching fire.
His body language narrated such a story. Each one of the missed opportunities appeared to irritate him, each dot ball was a pressure and all felt inadequate. It was not all about one inning either. Up until this match, Tilak Varma had been struggling in IPL 2026, having scored not more than 20 and not one six in the tournament.
A juncture in strategy came at just the right time, along with clarity. Hardik Pandya had also disclosed that he just sent Tilak a nice message watch the ball and strike the ball. No overthinking. No fear. All one has to do is believe in the inner aptitude that has seen him emerge as one of the star products in Mumbai.
Tilak came back to hit and he was a different player. An extra off ball of a good length was galloped round the wicketkeeper, and he audaciously scooped the ball. Rashid Khan, thereupon, missed a little in length, and Tilak, ordered him directly down the ground, for six. Shackles had disappeared.
But the actual killing came during the death overs. Tilak Varma burst with timing, strength and fearless intention and Gujarat Titans lost the control. He dismantled the rhythm of Ashok Sharma with one of the most savage overs of the season, and 6,4, 4, 6, 6 his breathless attack.
In moments, 19 off 22 became 75 off 37. What seemed impossible, now became inevitable. Tilak ceased to live he was dictating. All balls appeared to have been pre-read, all slower deliveries were foreseen, all yorkers were a scoring chance.
his half-dollar was tardy, yet the impetus was so violent that a century was soon afterwards realized. He then missed out on totting to three figures with just 45 balls thus breaking the long held record of 45 balls taken by Sanath Jayasuriya in IPL as the fastest hundred scored by a Mumbai Indians player.
| Stat | Tilak Varma Performance |
|---|---|
| Runs | 101* |
| Balls Faced | 45 |
| Strike Rate | 224.44 |
| Runs After First 22 Balls | 82 off next 23 |
| Fours | Multiple boundaries |
| Sixes | Match-defining power hitting |
| Result | MI won by 99 runs |
It was historically important that the knock was made. IPL history has very few players who have hit a century of batting at position No. 5 and below. The fact that he was able to do it once having sold 19 out of 22 balls makes it more extraordinary.
Last but not the least, the season of Mumbai Indians was also changed by the innings. The immense 99 run victory of MI over the Gujarat Titans meant that the former were out of the bottom of the table and into the fray. What was more important is that it reminded everybody about the explosive nature of the interior of their middle order.
