Kimi Antonelli Monaco GP Pole Stuns F1 Rivals

The biggest news of Formula 1 on Sunday was surely Kimi Antonelli Monaco GP Pole but it was the poignant (and hilarious) encounter between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen that really captured everyone’s attention following qualifying. The 19-year-old sensation, who is charging through social circles further afield than usual with a funky photo-op, had played it straight and imposed, but was equally life-affirms in the post-quals press conference where she didn’t manage to break the ice past just humorous.

That was the amazing lap of Antonelli which further cements his case as the new candidate in the title race of F1. The Italy youthster now holds the Drivers’ Championship record and is playing his way into the top-flight. But even as he has made a name for himself, one issue that has never been a encumbrance throughout the season has been race starts. With that weakness instantly became the laughing matter of two of Formula 1’s biggest stars.

A Breakthrough Moment at a moment in Monaco

First, however, it was a sensational qualifying effort around Monte Carlo’s streets, where it was one of the most difficult tracks on the Formula 1 calendar to drive around. The Mercedes driver took his time and used the skills of precision, confidence and commitment to get the best out of his driving around Monaco.

Many of these drivers secure pole position at Monaco, giving them a vantage point they can be confident they can exploit during the race as there is very little in the way of overtaking opportunities. Therefore, winning will be critical in Antonelli’s bid for the title.

The young Italian has already logged in some pretty impressive time this year but his Monaco pole time couldn’t be a more significant step in what’s quickly becoming a breakthrough season.

Antonelli, however, was swift to accept that there is a quality he needs to improve on, despite his qualifying success. He spoke about the fact that the race starts have not been great for him lately, during the post-session press conference, and also noted that they have not always went his way.

Siting his recent experiences, Antonelli explained that progress had been made, especially in Canadian Grand Prix weekend. He didn’t get jobs, but he was happy that he didn’t slip on himself anywhere he was going — something that killed his race.

For Sunday’s Monaco GP Antonelli said he wanted the cars to launch in a proper manner, not going for anything remarkable. With a short turn to Turn 1, there may be more at stake in failing to make a mistake than in getting an aggressive help.

Hamilton and Verstappen Deliver the Laughs

When Antonelli was asked if either of his teammates – Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen – had given him any tips for the start of the race, he turned them into teasing jibes.

Four-time world champion Verstappen was quick to respond with a joke that caused a stir of laughter.

According to Verstappen, Antonelli should wait one second after the lights go out before starting the race. Seven-time world champion Hamilton was not about to let up, so before he left, he suggested to the Mercedes driver to wait two seconds instead.

The trade occurred on the spot and instantly one of the highlight moments of the weekend. Clearly both champions were whistling in the dark, but the comments alluded to Antonelli’s proven problem starting and also spoke of the direction of respect being given to the three.

The Chemistry has fans. The Chemistry has fans.

Lastly, the viewers of Formula 1 shared their reactions on social media. The exchange was described by many as an example of the ‘puerile aspect of the sport’ and a perfect example of the chemistry between the trio was seen.

Meanwhile, a number of fans dubbed Hamilton and Verstappen as ‘Antonelli’s big brothers’ and others with a lighter tone called the two champions ‘the teenager’s fun uncles’. There was also praise from many where it is nice to have drivers of different generations competing in the front without any aggressive or hostile behavior with others and good ambience outside the track.

It also marked a recent trend in inconsequential banter between Hamilton and Verstappen. Both drivers, who have been rivals for years, have been seeing more leeway to tease and joke around with each other in years like 2026, longtime fans remarked.

With race day comes to Monaco, Antonelli will be on the mind of how to take pole position to victory. Still, no matter what occurs during an outing, completing the qualifying press conference has already established one of the funniest times of the season.

Antonelli’s dazzling speed, Verstappen’s flamboyancy and Hamilton’s wit will produce a viral moment in Formula 1 that will evoke this old favourite folklore in the sport: the need for flashing wits and quick-thinking to keep fans engaged. Antonelli will now have the chance to and answer the rib and/or register his Monaco pole victory as another championship-inspired win by eschewing the cheers surrounding the turn by breezing through it into the lead.
