Paraguay vs Germany was one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup when Paraguay beat four-time world cup champions Germany to become a historic side to make it to the round of 16. A blast from the final whistle, followed by unforgettable moments on the pitch, when Jose Canale confidently scored the decisive penalty and his teammates swarming around him in emotional celebrations.
Paraguay’s supporters, players and coaching staff were all joyful and proud of winning a World Cup match that will be remembered for years to come; Germany were to ponder another World Cup failure. Resilience, discipline and unwavering belief made it a triumph, and it was a testament to the power of passion and teamwork to outbeat all opponents on football’s biggest stage.
Paraguay’s first show of form was to prove they had a plan from the first whistle. Germany had almost 75 percent possession and passed out to Paraguay just over 161 passes to over 700 for Germany. Their side Julian Nagelsmann was able to pick off 21 shots in front of the net and the Paraguayan side was restricted to seven with. But statistics can’t tell the whole tale on knockout football. Paraguay put up excellent defensive organisation, dug up passing lanes and put aside Germany whenever they could. A cheer erupted with every tackle, interception and clearance, as the travelling supporters felt their team was creating something special.
But it wasn’t a coincidence that Paraguay looked so good defending. Under Gustavo Alfaro’s stewardship, since he was born into the job during the World Cup qualifying saga, the South Americans are one of the most intimidating teams to challenge. The experienced Argentine coach transformed Paraguay into a disciplined group who play as a team, taking to the task of defending first, attacking second. This is something they had already proved very well in qualification scoring under one goal a game, yet going all the time for the key assists. So against Germany, Alfaro’s system played out as flawlessly as it could, with his magpies staying calm, soaking up pressure from club-to-club and begrudgingly forgetting to panic event in the face of talent.
It was in the competition itself, around the time of the penalties, that the tension really built, with emotions going full force with every stroke of the golf club. Germany could not even do so after scoring the initial penalty. Kai Havertz was denied through the first set-up shot, giving Paraguay the groan.Kai Havertz came off the bench and lost the first opportunity of the first set-up, giving the Chileans the groaner. Nick Woltemade was also comebacked and was on the verge of getting Germany eliminated.
There had been clear chances for Paraguay to put the game away earlier, yet two wastages until Jose Canale came up with all the pressure on with the rest of the game. The defender reacted perfectly, and took the decisive penalty with great calm to cause the players and supporters to go ecstatic. Germany, however, got eliminated for the first time in the history of the World Cup after all four of their World Cup shootout matches thus far have been won.
In addition to the result, Paraguay vs Germany was now a national pride party. Tears flowed freely in the stands as families embraced, flags waved proudly and chants echoed throughout the stadium long after the final penalty was scored. For many of the younger supporters it was the first occasion in history of the World Cup for Paraguay to have won a game in a knockout round. The emotional impact of the win rapidly spread after the match beyond the football pitch as Paraguay’s President, Santiago Peña, proclaimed another national holiday in honor of their “extraordinary achievement. Defender Gustavo Gomez said this is the victory was for all Paraguayan citizens as the team has demonstrated the spirit of fighting to the glory of their country. Gustavo Alfaro, head coach, said the same thing, that his players are like a team of “heart that not gives up, no matter they have such limit.”
Lastly, Paraguay emerge into the Round of 16 with a tremendous momentum, having another heavyweight challenge to face in either France or Sweden. This is an event that will forever be etched in Paraguayan football folklore, whatever happens in the future. However, with one of the tournament’s big favourites out of the mix, Paraguay has risen to the position of being a team that can challenge any with determination, tactical discipline and faith in its own abilities.
Germany’s loss sparks new doubts about the team’s failure at the greatest stage of the game. In Paraguay the dream is still alive and the world now knows that the football world’s underdogs are no underdogs but real contenders with the power to make history.
