Manav Suthar Makes Dream Test Start in Galle

Manav Suthar booked a memorable opening against Sri Lanka in his Test debut while Devdutt Padikkal made a sensational 211-run match aggregate as India secured a commanding first Test victory of the series against them in Galle. Suthar picked up 10 wickets in the game including six in just the second innings while Padikkal posted a career-defining 167 in the first innings of India’s innings. In the process, they improved their competitive standing in the impressive winning line on Sri Lanka and put them in the lead at 1-0 in two Tests against the latter.

This victory was also important as it was the country’s 600th Test match. India had reached the milestone for the third time for the third team and inked an uncrackable record of winning their 300th, 400th, 500th and 600th Tests on the way. It was a match where there was a huge milestone and both the individual efforts from the players were terrific which helped India to have a lot of positives when going into the next Test.

First of all India have enjoyed a long dominance against Sri Lanka, which ended with their win. It continued their run of best form in Sri Lanka with 6 consecutive wins since their defeat in Galle last year. Sri Lanka have fallen to injury at the same time as India have won nine of their previous 11 Tests against Sri Lanka. India are also nearing their completion of their unbeaten streak against Sri Lanka in Test series (following their current series win, they are now in seven consecutive series winning streak since 2008).

The Indian cricket team also advanced to the joint fourth position in the list of most Test winning teams by picking up the 188th win in the format. It makes Galle a more than just score on the scoreboard. Another historic occasion in India’s Test legacy and one which cannot be forgotten due to the influence of Suthar and Padikkal.

But none of the stories from Galle is more prominent than Manav Suthar. The left-arm spinner ended his match with 10 wickets that included match-wicket against the best bowler in Sri Lanka for Indian bowlers in the country. It was the first time Harbhajan Singh and R Ashwin had shared the 10-wicket partnership in a test for India, both having picked up most wickets in Galle.

Suthar’s second innings stats of 6/55 were the second-highest by an Indian in Sri Lanka, after Ashwin’s 6/46 in the same innings off the same side in 2015. He struck a record, namely a three wicket over as only an Indian bowler had ever struck three wickets in India’s first time against the Proteas this year.

The guy also did a wonderful job to make Suthar part of a very exclusive Indian bowling club. He is the second Indian after Mohammad Nissar to take five-wicket haul both at home and away Test debut. Suthar is 17 wicket for 2 Test scales with just two Tests under his belt. With only 24 and 18 wickets to his name, respectively, after two Tests, Axar Patel’s and Narendra Hirwani had the most wickets for India.

After that came Devdutt Padikkal’s marvellous come-back. The batter, who stitched a 14-match void starting after his debut came from Perth in 2024, walked into the Test side and picked up the ball right as he walked. After being absent from 14 Tests since his debut, he walked into the Test side and started it right away the way every returning player wishes. Padikkal delivered a stellar 167 in India’s first hit while then added yet a significant 211 run performance to it in India’s second innings.

It was also the second-biggest match score combination in a match by an Indian from Sri Lanka as Virender Sehwag scored 251 in Galle in 2008. Padikkal blasted his first-innings 167 match-up off at the SCG and made his 150-plus score first for an Indian No. 3 in the Green Dyના the side.

His 100th came next; he was just as important. Padikkal is the first Indian batsman to cap off his No. 3 appearance with a Test hundred since Shubman Gill’s maiden century against Bangladesh in 2024. Playing after returning from such a lengthy period on the dull side of things was the right reaction for a player making their comeback.

Lastly the comeback of Padikkal’s was all the more impressive due to what followed. Following a seemingly windswept 14-test absence, he was given the Player of the Match accolade, joining the list of a handful of players who have managed to do this after such an extended hiatus even for Indians.

Galle Test became an important acquirement for India as much more than a win. Both Suthar and Padikkal made their debut assertion that they could be considered a viable long-term spin option while a tough search for another place to play Test cricket was made into a statement performance. The outcome does India some good in the series, but the greater lesson to be learnt is two players who reacted in drastically different ways to the opportunity.

The one was beginning to make a mark in Test cricket and the other was a case of him readjusting his place. Both made sure that their names will be etched into the minds of India batsman from 600th Test match.
