Bruno Fernandes has questioned Michael Carrick’s tactics and Manchester United are riding the crest of a wave of pressure following their humiliation at Como on Wednesday in the Champions League. The win brought United to their seventh consecutive losing streak in all competitions, and renewed the question of what will happen to the head coach. Carrick acknowledged shortcomings in the team in his post-match statement, but had instead turned to visiting home fans, while Fernandes’ remarks have raised greater concerns regarding the pressuring style of play, the team’s set-up on the defensive line and what was lacking in general intensity.
The Tangerang United team were unable to win easy in the face of Manchester United’s European pedigree. Como got the first crack at it early, with Nico Paz providing the scoring lead as soon as the game started after 118 seconds. The Italians played much the same tactic and were still exploiting the United defence with Carrick’s side still unable to get back to level. Joshua Zirkzee made it 2-0 on the night, though it was the consolation score the goal is 4-0 wasn’t too much to leave us cheering.
It is a matter of facts because Fernandes found no need to mince words when it was put to him by TNT Sports in his interview regarding the problems United has off the bench. It is here the Portuguese midfielder suggested that conceding space and time to opponents meant Come too much time and confidence to take the ball.
He also suggested that United should be more daring, to upset their opponents, to go further up the pitch. questioned whether Carrick had turned things around in a way that he had erred, Fernandes told grosset imeeter that that was for the manager and coaches to evaluate.
Spotless is important as Fernandes is one of United’s most tactually-astute players in the game. His criticism questioned whether the team fully believe in the direction they have gone as its fortunes have sunk in the sharp turnaround in results in recent times.
Carrick gave a strong reaction to Fernandes’ big words. Running hard, pressing forward and playing defensively were key points that he made when he didn’t believe tactical systems alone could cause the defeat. There is a big issue there because, irrespective of the formation or approach, it is important for United to have the corresponding firepower and discipline to secure victories.
The team’s manager also expressed his dismay to supporters who came to watch the team in Como. Carrick admitted it was a performance “far from what they would expect from him in any way” at Manchester United, and described the blaggers’ frustration. His approach to the travelling supporters on the final whistle was a way of recognising their support through the tough times, he said.
But Carrick didn’t discuss his future, saying his focus was on the fans and on the team’s performance, not his own.
The losing game is deeply frustrating for Manchester United. The club are in 13th place in the league with three points back of bottom Sunderland and haven’t beaten the city rivals, Ipswich, in their league opener. Their only other winning streak of the season in their last 11 games of all competition came versus Sabah FK in Azerbaijan in the Champions League.
The last time when United did not win seven matches was when Loui van Gaal was in charge in 2015 when they struggled to win eight games in a row. The comparison highlights the going wrong with the campaign since Carrick led the venture back to the Champions League last season.
The club has attracted criticism in the recruitment area too. United added three midfielders in the summer but couldn’t add any competition in for left-back Luke Shaw or striker Benjamin Sesko. The flushes and troughs have sparked questions about the depth of their squad, but the admin side of recruiting and money is part of everyone’s job but the head guy.
Sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada also are under scrutiny for how they’re running the club. During the defeat supporters expressed their anger towards the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe over the football club’s poor forms, signifying the general unhappiness with the club’s management.
Then it’s on to Bournemouth on Sunday in the Premier League. It will be a huge task for United to come back quickly, but they will need to overcome it, as Bournemouth’s search for comfort at Old Trafford matches their ability to thrive there. If he yet again misses another game, that will further push Carrick to the brink, and beginning to give him the heat he deserves regarding his ability to deliver with consistency.
The Como loss is more than just an embarrasing trip to the Old World for Manchester United, though. A look at the criticism Fernandes has levelled at Carrick as well as the team’s form suggests more serious issues that need to be addressed. In order to restore tactical clarity, work rate and confidence it is clear the club need to find a solution otherwise the situation looks bleak and will get worse.
