Kimi Antonelli Eyes F1 Title at US GP

Kimi Antonelli F1 title hopes are at a key stage at the United States Grand Prix as the Mercedes driver has the first mathematical opportunity in the history of Formula 1 to become the junior race driver, at just 25 years of age, to win the World Championships. The 20 year old has had a great season with eight Grand Prix and 14 podium finishes to clinch an outstanding top spot in the 2026 season.

Unfortunately, it will be no piece of cake to win tonight at the Circuit of the Americas. Antonelli must achieve a perfect showing in his own performance as well as in his rivals’ hands, if they are close contenders. Though there, here the Italian has made it clear he is certainly not going to let the thought of an impending chase of championships get in the way of his play style.

Antonelli would win Sunday’s race, Mercedes teammate George Russell would come in 9th or lower and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton placed no higher than a 5th to become the world champion. The championship leader’s position is very strong at this juncture as Russell sits 102 points behind Antonelli, but the title is not a lock.

Instead of paying attention to the points table, Antonelli would like to pay attention to what is right in front of him. Throughout the season that’s been the attitude he’s viewed things from; and he’s sticking to that throughout the tripleheader at home in the United States, Mexico and Brazil.

Antonelli said that his first shot at the crown is something that he’ll do, ‘properly'”. The Mercedes driver admitted that it was an anomaly but said that he did not want to dwell on the potential scenario.

A win this weekend would mean he would have to perform his usual routine and get his opponents to play unpredictably, he said. In that case, he feels it’ll be preferable for him to play as well as he can and not get distracted because he can break the record.

Antonelli also stated that he spoke to his race engineer Peter Bonnington aka Bono. Their message was simple: “Come in and have a good time, keep attitude the same, come to the races as they come to every other race this season.

However, the young Italian was consistent in his comments, which have contributed to his excellent shape in this championship. He sees the United States Grand Prix as a race weekend, rather than a race day that is “title” day.

So far for him that seems to be the right thing to do. Eight wins and 14 top-three finishes have got Antonelli to the point he is at very early in his Formula 1 career. This season, he now has the chance to make that consistency transform into one of the greatest in the sport.

However, the showdown is by no means done. For other races, Russell and Hamilton are still significant players to keep in mind in the title equation and the outcome in Austin may have an impact on how the remaining races play out. While this weekend might not be the week for Antonelli to win the Grand Prix, he’ll have more chances to do so at Mexico City and Brazilian editions.

To outfit Antonelli with the best platform to match, will be the first thing Mercedes will work on. If the team and driver are successful with a weekend miracle win, he’ll be in a strong position but the pressure is another element that will come with a potential championship weekend.

If Antonelli becomes world champion he will be fulfilling a dream he’ve had since his youth. This is an impressive feat for 20-year-old, just to be here and have a realistic chance at winning the title.

But he wants the celebration to wait till he’s finished. He pointed out that the performances he could produce is the thing that, for him, must be continued until he is done with the races. It is never until after winning the trophy, that he appreciates what he has achieved.

While the title may not be won in Austin, the United States Grand Prix signifies a major event in Antonelli’s season. His challenge now is to continue that style that’s gotten him to his current position without playing too far in front of themselves.

But Antonelli’s message overall is well defined: The opportunity for the championship is great, but he’s got you covered for racing at a high level. If he can deliver another fine performance at the Circuit of the Americas, the days of him being an F1 driver may be a reality for the taquileño.
