Antonio Fuoco to Feature in Ferrari FP1 at Mexico GP

Antonio Fuoco will be featured in headlines, as he prepares to participate in the FP1 at Mexico City Grand Prix with Scuderia Ferrari. This is a momentous occasion on the side of the Italian driver driving into a Formula 1 car in a competitive environment again. Due to this fact that the spotlight changes to this weekend action, the story unfolds as follows.

Antonio Fuoco has worked with Ferrari since early days in development and on this Friday, Antonio Fuoco will be in Free Practice 1 in the SF-25 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.  Despite Ferrari not confirming as of yet as to whether he will replace either Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton, it is commonly anticipated that he will miss the session and give Fuoco his place.

Over the past few years, Formula 1 has added and widened regulations that mandate the vehicles to incorporate youthful or inexperienced drivers in some practice drives. In 2025, every car will have to complete two such rookie laps in FP1.  Although Fuoco is technically not really a rookie, in the literal meaning of the word, his assignment still conforms to the overall trend of providing non-regular drivers with the opportunity to have a run in FP1. Such an opportunity will give both Ferrari and Fuoco something worthwhile: an exposure, a data collection and development insight.

We will take a look at the background of Fuoco. The 29 years old Italian has established a massive non F1 resume. He also races in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Ferrari AF Corse and in 2024, he assisted the Maranello team to secure the 24 Hours of Le Mans win.  He is also familiar with the F1 programme of Ferrari his first test drive in the team was in 2015 at Red Bull Ring, and the following years he participated in young-drivers and post-season tests with Ferrari.

Moreover, the relocation aligns with the larger strategy used by Ferrari of providing opportunities to drivers supporting it. Ferrari entered a driver, Dino Beganovic in FP1, earlier this season at Bahrain. The decision to resort to Antonio Fuoco now fits the trend further and indicates the intent of the team in delving into the depths and developing potential in the pool of its drivers.

There is little doubt however that there are no pressures to stepping into FP1. As much as the session involves more data collection and provision of drivers with track time than the award of glory, the standards at Ferrari are high. In the case of Fuoco doing great is important not just displaying the speed but also providing meaningful feedback and adapting to the car along with working with the team and showing the willingness to take up those opportunities. Any slip, even on the practice session, might be exaggerated due to the presence of the spectators of Ferrari and the importance of the FP1 opportunities.

In addition to this, the timing is intriguing. This is occurring at the Mexico City event which has been over the years successful in rookie and substitute driver outings due to the location and to a degree due to its position in the season.  This decision can be explained by the convenience of selection and strategic considerations: Ferrari might view this as a perfect location to hold this event without throwing its competitiveness on the main weekend of the race in jeopardy.

So what does this imply in the future? In case Fuoco betoys himself during FP1, it will further open doors additional track time, greater engagement with the team, even seat time during a full Grand Prix weekend. In the case of Ferrari, it will represent more data, more versatility and a demonstration of its driver-development process at work.

Finally, the decision to hire Antonio Fuoco to the FP1 of the Ferrari FP1 in Mexico City Grand Race was not a single action. It highlights the development strategy of the team and provides an experienced and highly trusted driver with an opportunity to shine in a high visibility position and brings another dimension of interest of this weekend event. To the fans, it is worth watching how Fuoco is going to acclimatise to the SF-25, how Ferrari will utilize the session, and how the whole thing is going to be in the future. The session will take place on Friday and will probably provide an insight into future actions in the back of Ferrari.
