Carlos Sainz has never tried to hide the idea that Williams has surpassed his expectations in 2025 F1 championship, even though his performance is yet to be with the potential car could deliver. The Spaniard was the high profile defector Ferrari to Williams when Lewis Hamilton secured the last vacant seat at Maranello, and much interactively was doubtful of the move. However, with James Vowles in charge, the team has turned out to be more competitive in the midfield than a number of people expected, which presents Sainz with a stronger platform than anticipated.
Despite Sainz currently being 16th in the driver standings, the Spaniard claims that performances of the team are higher than the figures. His teammate Alex Albon has profited better having 54 points as opposed to the 16 points scored by Sainz, but the Spaniard insists that the margins between them on the track are small, as in some cases only tenths of a second are separating them. The variance has been due to bad race running, unfortunate breaks and consistency issues that have not allowed him to convert good speeds into substantial outcomes.
Vowles has not hesitated to give credit to Sainz on factors besides his performances in races. This has enabled him to be considered almost a second strategist by the team principal who has said that the team member is capable of providing ideas and contributing to decisions made that is helpful to the greater team. The technical input and ideas of Sainz have also been useful as Williams struggle to make its way up the midfield ladder. This is evident in constructors championship where the Williams is ranked at fifth position- a giant leap in comparison with the past years.
Nevertheless, the season has not been all rosy. Sainz has classed his performance as ever so frustrating and disappointing as he has had recurrent technical failures that have set him back time after time like the problems in Austria with his brakes which caused him not to jump into the starting grid. He has also confessed that he has not been able to consistently put together good weekends together, with the team he leads and this is something he is well aware needs a significant improvement in case results should follow. The disillusionment is obvious, but so too is the feeling that Williams possess the elements of success in the future provided that they can remove the mistakes and exploit the characteristics of their car.
As to the future, Sainz is hopeful. Things are looking promising with new upgrades that have increased aerodynamic efficiency and good pace at various circuits and he feels it will not be long before the turning point is reached. Williams is yet to become a leading team but it has already performed better than expected by many including Sainz himself. Until then, it is about utilizing that progress to materialize in the achievement that he and the team believe they are entitled.
