When Carlos Sainz picked Williams, a historic team that had long since lost its glory days. And to my mind, this is not a career move. Sainz is making Williams his life mission, the mission to recover its own course along with the brand name of one of the greatest figures of the sport.
I have long been after Williams, and now the sense of atmosphere I have is that it is a very different one than was the darkness of winter. Since James Vowles is a leader, the staff now has direction, resources, and a roadmap. Securing a race winner such as Sainz is an indication that Williams is not only serious about the midfield wilderness
In the view of Sainz, the cry is self-evident. At Ferrari, he never took the place of Charles Leclerc who was a driver the team had definitely planned to feature as their long run performer. Batteries not included, however, he receives something he hasn’t actually enjoyed in Formula 1 before at Williams which is the opportunity to be the point man of team rebuild. He is not taking over and continuing somebody else’s work, he is turning into the face of it. It may seem like heavy burden to such responsibility, but to a driver of the experience and appetite of Sainz, it is that sort of thing that makes legacies.
The symbolism interests me the most. Williams, the team which had dominated via heroes like Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill in the Formula 1 is now blessed with a driver who is ready to invest not only his talents but also his faith in the team. Sainz would have played the safe card and pursued another team in the midfield that had slightly better equipment.
In my opinion, the two sides are mutually dependent. Williams requires a leader who is on track in order to vision its resurgence. Sainz must have a project to give his life meaning besides becoming a number two driver. They are set to leap together, either missing the landing and suffering a dead-end frustrating conclusion, or soaring into one of the most interesting stories of a true Formula 1 comeback.
Conceiving what Sainz says, when she refers to Williams as his life project, the hammers of the stakes of Williams proceedings press one and another and I will not pick up until I come back home. Assuming this is a success, it will not be a fresh start. It will turn into one of the great stories of emsebling of the sport. And being a viewer since Williams has been long gone into the gloom, I cannot wait to find out whether Sainz will be the one to get them pulled back into the limelight.
