The Hamilton Horner rumours have brought gossip in Formula 1 on a different level and Hamilton is definitely not amused by it. The F1 paddock was off overdrive this week as word spread that ex-Red Bull boss Christian Horner may be taking a new role under Ferrari possibly on top of Fred Vasseur as the principal of the team. And as the fans and pundits argued about what would have happened, Hamilton putting it to rest with a single word, distracting, and it is not true. So, what exactly happened? Why does it matter? and what is that of a present mood of Ferrari? Let’s break it down.

It is a distraction, says Hamilton.

The question that Hamilton had to answer is something inevitable during the U.S. Grand Prix media day. His response to the news was cool and clearly exaggerated, he simply thought the Horner talk was none of his business; and hoped that it would be forgotten. And what rumours have you heard about me, I do not know, said he. It is distracting a bit to us as a team.

That is as plain as Hamilton is when he is responding to media conjecture. He soon switched the discussion around to Vasseur, the current boss of the Ferrari team as it is a way of reminding everyone that the Frenchman also had his contract renewed this summer and is an important part of the team rebuild. Fred is doing a fine job, Hamilton said. This is what we are coming up with here and that is where the center of attention should be.

To the point, to the short, to the point, that is the answer that is expected to stop at a headline before it gets legs.

Why these rumours will not clear.

Nonetheless, Hamilton Horner rumours did not arise somewhere. It is not unfounded that F1 fans (some of them insiders) are talking about it.

The season of Ferrari has not been that great. The Scuderia has not won once in this season although Hamilton has made an arrival and initially shown some pace. Consistent podiums? Sure. Victories? None. Such drought in Ferrari always causes internal noise – and the Italian press loves drama.

Horner’s sudden Red Bull exit.

Christian Horner quits his Milton Keynes outfit more than twenty years after the outfit had its inception was the season surprise. Since then he has been associated – with merit or otherwise – with any available high-profile vacancy in F1. Ferrari is automatically the most appetizing target as it is the ultimate power brand of the sport.

Boardroom speculations and time.

Some of the European outlets alleged that Horner had an informal meeting with Ferrari chairman John Elkann. Nothing was certain, but sufficient to nourish the monster and all you need is an uncharacteristically poor performance of Ferrari and the cash sale of Hamilton that you need to create a rumour storm that allows Hamilton to become even richer.

Ferrari’s real problem:focus

In the case of Ferrari, the threat is not the entry by Horner, but the fact that the speculation takes away the grind. That was clear according to the comment of Hamilton. Ferrari management understands it is a bridge year of 2025 2026 will be the year of the colossal engine regulation reset. It is then that all this changes: power units, aero philosophy, even that between drivers and their teams. The anchors of that project are supposed to be Hamilton and Vasseur. That way when such stories emerge in the middle of the season they have a chance to shake faith internally. No wonder it is that Hamilton cut through it.

The bigger F1 picture

The Hamilton Horner rumours also carry the effect of the unpredictable political situation of the sport. Christian Horner is now a free agent. Patiently wait to see the results, Ferrari, as always is constantly struggling with his leadership requirements. And Hamilton who has graduated out of the predictability of Mercedes to the anarchic aggressive tempest of Maranello, has entered the nest of a hornet.

To foreigners, it is drama to death. To the insiders it is precisely what Hamilton cautioned against, a distraction, which favours competitors rather than the team.
