One of the most intense situations in the qualifying on the Australian Grand Prix was Max Verstappen Crash when the defending champion lost control and ran into the wall in the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. This event cut his session short and was briefly disturbing in the conduct of the Dutch driver. Nevertheless, when subjected to precautionary medical examinations and taking of X-rays on his hands the four-time Formula 1 champion confirmed that he had come out of the crash unharmed.
Accident happened in the very first flying lap of the opening qualifying by Verstappen. With the latest challenger of Red Bull, the RB22, the Dutch driver was on his way to Turn 1 when the rear wheels turned into braking wheels. The loss of control propelled the car into a spin and hit the barriers. This was very much and made Verstappen immediately retire out of the session, and end up without a competitive lap time.
First, the focus has soon changed to the physical state of Verstappen after the accident. Even though he seemed to get out of the car without significant pain, Formula 1 safety measures demanded the driver to have medical examination. Its medical center in Albert Park is manned by the medical personnel of the local The Alfred Hospital that offers emergency medical services during race weekends.
Even the drivers underwent some precautionary X-rays on their hands, which eliminated the risk of fracturing or injury that could have been caused to the drivers by the impact of the steering wheel in the collision. The driver of Red Bull had assured the media that there was nothing serious after the checks were made. Verstappen, who qualified after the incident, stated that the X-rays had no broken bones, and he was okay, despite the fact that he was hit heavily.
The crash however is a mystery of sorts. When Verstappen was talking to journalists, he said that he did not discuss the incident in detail with his team yet. In his original explanation, the back wheel of his car got stuck at a time whilst he was braking towards the first corner.
He was caught all off his guard by the abrupt lock-up. Verstappen said that this kind of car reaction is very abnormal in formula 1 equipment especially when in normal braking situations. The Dutch driver even acknowledged that he had never undergone the same problem in his entire race time.
Although accident caused by the unusual nature of the accident, Verstappen did not openly fault the new generation of Formula 1 cars or the recent rules of technical regulations. The sport has seen a new dawn where regulations have taken some big changes, more in terms of new power unit systems, and new chassis concepts. There are drivers who have proposed that the changes might affect the manner in which cars will behave in braking and acceleration.
Verstappen did not want to make conclusions immediately, though. Otherwise, he stressed that the team should thoroughly analyze the incident and then locate the precise cause. He says that there are numerous technical circumstances that might lead to such unexpected lock-up such as brakes, tire action, or electronics.
In the meantime, the crash led to significant impact on the starting point of Verstappen in the race. The Red Bull driver will also be starting the Grand Prix at the back of the grid, as he never set a representative lap time in the qualifying. This places the defending champion in a bad position to race and particularly at a circuit as at Albert Park where passing may be minimal.
Verstappen will be placed in 20th place together with Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll, who also lead a queu in the back after not even taking part in the qualification session. This becomes a difficult task to the trio in case they want to break through the field and get some points in the race.
Conversely, Isack Hadjar, the when teammate to Verstappen, gave Red Bull Racing a good performance by qualifying 3 rd in the grid. But that outcome, too, pointed out the competitive difference on the front with Hadjar almost eight-tenths of a second behind pole sitter George Russell.
Lastly, although the Max Verstappen Crash ended his qualifying session in a dramatic fashion, the good news on the part of the fans of Red Bull and Formula 1 is that he was not hurt during the incident. Verstappen now has a fully healthy driver and a fast car, so he will have to make one of the most difficult attempts of the season; a comeback drive. It will be the first race to test his ability and the race strategy of Red Bull, so Sunday Australian Grand Prize will be even more unpredictable and interesting to watch among the fans all over the world.
