Shreyas Iyer hails from one of the soundest of batting schools – Mumbai. But he also has the raw power and audacity you can’t teach.

Born in Chembur, a Mumbai suburb, in a traditional south-Indian family, Iyer was spotted by former India player and Mumbai coach Pravin Amre at 18. During his age-group cricket days, he was compared to Virender Sehwag. There is the hand-eye co-ordination and daredevilry a la Sehwag that makes Iyer one of the most exciting talents in the country.

The right-handed batsman, has been making waves ever since his debut Ranji Trophy season in 2014-15. He scored 809 runs at an average of 50.56. But that was just a glimpse of things to come. In the next-season, Iyer compiled 1321 runs and scored a hundred to help Mumbai to a 41st Ranji title.

He was only the second player – after VVS Laxman (1415 runs for Hyderabad in 1999-2000) – to score more than 1300 runs in a single Ranji season. And he did so at a strike rate of 92.70.

Iyer showed he could be just as swashbuckling on the international stage too as he made the most of his first batting opportunity for India in the ODIs. Having made his debut earlier in the ODI series against Sri Lanka in December 2017, Iyer scored 88 from 70 balls as India won by 141 runs.

In 2019, during an ODI against West Indies, the power-hitter tore into Roston Chase, scoring 31 runs off him in an over – the most by an Indian batsman in a single over in ODIs.

He was picked by the Delhi team in India’s biggest T20 franchise league for Rs 2.6 crore in 2015. He was announced as captain of the team in 2018, and has held that title ever since.
