Not a soul foretold it—Marco Bezzecchi raced to success at Silverstone with a victory unlikely to be matched in 2025. A rider who didn’t have pole,, riding a factory-fringe Aprilia, faced the cold, used a soft front tyre and lined up behind a group of intense title contenders, but emerged victorious.
Things are always unpredictable at Silverstone in August, but this was outrageously unpredictable. Crashes. Red flags. Mechanical heartbreaks. Even as the race kept getting more difficult, Bezzecchi remained calm, nailed every overlapping lap and won with ease. Should I go soft on my tyre settings? For most people, it looked like recklessness. Bez made it one of his greatest work.
The madness began right at the beginning—truly. Alex Marquez, who qualified in pole position, came off worst at the first turn after seemingly losing control. After that, Marc Marquez’s front tire slid out at Maggots. We didn’t even have time to get our thoughts together before we spotted the red flags. Some oil spilled on the track. We lost two more riders. Morbidelli and AleixEspargaro had a run-in at Vale. Restart.
Because of that reset, things went well for the Marquez brothers. Everyone headed to the pits, switched to a new bike and went back to racing. It didn’t throw Quartararo off his game. After a clear lead of five seconds by Lap 8, Manuel was riding like last year’s champion. However, fate or better yet Yamaha, chose a different route for me. After the engine failed catastrophically on Lap 12, he rolled to a still place. Heartbreak. Again.
Bezzecchi kept his composure when the questions started. He proceeded slowly, using as little rubber as he could, waiting for his target. Miller was slowing down, but Zarco went faster and Alexandre Bez picked up the pace. After every lap, he got just a little more ahead. As soon as Quartararo’s Yamaha failed, Bezzecchi overtook him and didn’t let go of the front again. He passed Zarco in three straight laps and built a gap too large for Marc Marquez to overcome.
Zarco should be given credit as well. To finish second on a Honda, in these tough circumstances, is a remarkable result. He succeeded in remaining straight despite many heads rolling around him. He is a rider who thinks and that suits the layout at Silverstone.
How Marc Marquez continues to grab podium spots may determine the championship outcome. A reset after the crash saw him race as usual, with plenty of defending moves and drifting in tough spots. There was some racing action at the end, when Morbidelli and the 93 battled, but Danilo kept ahead. That’s the reason he’s in the lead for the title.
Morbidelli managed to take home fourth overall. There hasn’t been much action for him this year, yet he drove really well today. After his trouble early on, Alex Marquez fought back to end on the fifth step of the podium. Now, he is 24 points behind his brother in the standings. I am alive, but not getting any stronger.
Pedro Acosta completed another secure ride and crossed the line in sixth, overtaking Jack Miller in the final stages. Luca Marini came ninth, Fermin Aldeguer came tenth, Fabio di Giannantonio was eleventh and Joan Mir finished twelfth. Bagnaia? He was as good as dead. I started well, faded at some point and wound up on the ground again. He stands in third at the championship, with 72 less points than Marquez. It’s not just a gap; it’s a massive difference.
Some penalties handed out after the race changed the order. The penalties for Marini, Bastianini, Savadori and Chantra all took 16 seconds off their times. Brad Binder moved one spot behind because he left the race track on several occasions. The Czech GP moved Joan Mir higher in the standings.
However, all that still puts Bezzecchi and Aprilia in the spotlight. They did more than just win that achievement saved us. Aprilia’s last win had come more than a year earlier.
MotoGP is always full of unexpected moments. The weekend also featured a brilliant Silverstone GP. A race where tyres spun and cars struggled, the unexpected winner kept his footing with soft fronts. Bezzecchi’s victory was the result of him staying steady, while others rushed around.
Is Bezzecchi able to do this again? Was this an exceptional case? Did we just observe a small beginning to something much greater?
With all the Marquez family drama this season, Bezzecchi has boldly added his own success—a win he will always remember.
