Kolkata Knight Riders eventually get a lift off in IPL 2026 following a tight run-off in order to beat Rajasthan Royals, and achieve their first win of the year. The six unsuccessful matches came to an end when KKR got relieved with the help of their favourite pair of spins and a calm ending by Rinku Singh. It was no smooth, it was no easy but it can be the moment when their campaign starts again.
The tension on Kolkata Knight Riders in the lead-up to the game was tremendous. A second loss would have put them well into ineliminationville. Instead, they reacted with grit, canny bowling and calmness during the last over to surpass 155 of the Rajasthan with two balls left.
The building blocks of this victory were made by the KKR spinners first. Early on, Rajasthan Royals had things going their way and were 81 without error, and were looking to score way higher. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi managed the powerplay cleverly, reading the slower surface, and not taking needless risks.
But after the spin attack was introduced, then everything changed. Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine showed once again why they can be considered as one of the most feared combinations in T20 cricket. Varun ended with three wickets with Narine behind him with two and they squeezed Rajasthan through the internal overs.
The eight overs between them cost a total of 40 only and got them five wickets. On a pitch that was grippy and turny, the two managed the tempo brilliantly. Rajasthan spiraled out of a good base and lost momentum at the point where teams should gain momentum.
Such a deceleration was expensive. In spite of their promising beginning, Rajasthan were able to control only 155 an overall that sounded formidable yet not overwhelming. Kartik Tyagi followed up with another pivotal contribution to Kolkata Knight Riders, scoring a terrific 19th over and ending with three wickets. His magic failed Rajasthan the last-minute burst that can turn close games.
Nevertheless, the pursuit by KKR got off to a dismal start. Jofra Archer was already on a great season when he struck out with the initial ball, the third time he has done so this season. Tim Seifert had been bowled and nerves seemed to be returning about Eden Gardens.
KKR immediately was in punishment, and Ajinkya Rahane left. Cameron Green replied with a swift 27 off 13 balls threatening to hit hard, but Dhruv Jurel came in with a fantastic stumping to stop him and take over the game on Rajasthan side.
Wickets continued to fall and Kolkata Knight Riders got into trouble. A spin-trio by the Royals that was led by Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi stalled the scoring and narrowed the gap. At a point, KKR had to run over two times a ball and looked sure to be losing in yet another torturous defeat.
Then followed the turning point.
Rinku Singh, who had been sacked eight times, paid off Rajasthan. Unruffled, he threw out a slog-swept six off Bishnoi, to initiate the pursuit. Suddenly, belief returned. This was followed by an assaulting cameo by Anukul Roy smashing 29 with only 16 balls and attacking lengths where others had found it difficult to score, without any fear.
That alliance changed the equation. Archer bowled a wonderful penultimate over full of yorkers, but Roy got an important six. KKR was on the advantage with nine required on the last over.
And at last, Rinku Singh finished the job off in fashion. The left-hander hit a match-winning six which simultaneously raised his half-century to the sky, and the fans jubilated and ended the pitiful beginning of the season that Kolkata had.
This victory was not just two points to Kolkata Knight Riders. It was concerning trust, momentum and evidence that they still have match winners who can turn the game around. Their spinners are still top of the world, their lower middle order managed to rescue tricky chases and Rinku Singh proved once again why he performs well when it counts.
Rajasthan Royals will be regretting that they lost the game shortly following giant stride, yet KKR should be given credit on the fact that they never gave in.
The future of the road is uncertain, but this is perhaps the seed of life Kolkata required. Provided that they continue their performance there is a chance that IPL 2026 could have a second chapter of Kolkata Knight Riders.
