Eshan Malinga is rapidly turning into one of IPL’s best kept secrets and Sunrisers Hyderabad seems to have clear understanding of just how deadly Malinga can get. The Sri Lankan pacer is slowly gaining acclaim as one of the most effective reverse-swing bowlers in international cricket whilst bigger names usually take the limelight. He has mastered the art of controlling the old ball, hitting in the middle and death strikes and derailing the content of the chasing teams that have made him a key strategic weapon of SRH in IPL 2026.
In a game where batters tend to shine, bowlers who are able to alter the courses of the ball towards the end of an innings are invaluable. It is at that juncture that Eshan Malinga is making a difference. He might not have the slinging of Lasith Malinga or the blistering speed of the modern fast-bowling rockets, but his ability, smarts, and timing, are providing SRH with a formidable advantage.
To begin with is his mastery of reverse swing which is so effective of Eshan Malinga. With the age of the ball, most of the bowlers will have trouble moving and employing only the yorkers or slower balls. However, Malanga applies seam position, wrist control and slight changes in angles, to sharply reintroduce the ball to batters. He just comes in late, wets the wickets, tightens the scoring percentages and walks away with the game changed.
As IPL 2026 enters the crucial phase, SRH has discovered the best bowling formula in the match. With Malinga coming together with Pat Cummins on occasions, Malinga could be even more effective in attacking Hyderabad.
At least one thing is proving hard to believe, as yet Eshan Malinga is out of the closet. He will be a winning goalgetter.
