2024 IndyCar Season Kickoff Chevrolet’s Performance Breakdown

Chevrolet has made significant strides following an impressive performance at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, marking a promising start to the 2024 IndyCar season. At the challenging 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit, Chevrolet secured a remarkable 1-2-3-4 sweep, with Josef Newgarden of Team Penske leading the pack, dominating 92 out of 100 laps from pole position to clinch victory.

Despite only winning five races compared to Honda’s 12, Chevrolet claimed the 2023 manufacturers’ title. However, its success was primarily on ovals, while Honda outperformed on road courses, showcasing superior drivability and fuel mileage.

During the offseason, Chevrolet-powered drivers engaged in collaborative discussions with teams, outlining desired improvements for the 2024 season. Rob Buckner, IndyCar Program Manager for Chevrolet, emphasized the collective efforts invested in enhancing Chevrolet’s performance.

Buckner highlighted Chevrolet’s commitment to excellence, citing investments in resources such as the new Charlotte Technical Center, advanced software tools, and talented hires. The continuous refinement of the Chevrolet engine package, coupled with improved team performance and support, has propelled the brand forward in the competitive landscape of IndyCar racing.

The impressive results at St. Petersburg provided an early boost, although Honda retaliated with victory in the non-points Thermal Million Dollar Challenge. Buckner acknowledged the significance of the victory at St. Petersburg while emphasizing the long road ahead in the 17-race season.

Refinements to the current 2.2-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine have coincided with the development of hybrid technology, set to debut in the second half of the season. Testing efforts, led by Team Penske and Arrow McLaren for Chevrolet, and Andretti Global and Chip Ganassi Racing for Honda, have been intensive.

Buckner expressed confidence in the collective capabilities of GM, Ilmor, and their partners, along with the resilience of race teams, in navigating the challenges of the hybrid era.
