Lando Norris managed to secure victory during the wet and unpredictable 2025 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix as he battled to defend against reigning champion Max Verstappen until crossing the finish line first at Albert Park. McLaren’s driver secured pole position during qualifying on Saturday then weathered the challenging conditions and safety car periods and a track exit incident which led him to secure a vital victory for the first race of the season. The win in Malaysia has put Lester Norris first in the pointsrace and indicates McLaren could seriously compete with Red Bull Racing for the 2025 championship title.
All 20 drivers started the race by choosing intermediate tires as Melbourne experienced impending rain before the first laps began. At Turn 2 Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls experienced an off-track incident which triggered an aborted beginning before the official start of the race while damaging his rear wing. Immediately after the start Verstappen positioned himself behind Piastri before Norris had already built a substantial gap at the front of the field.
The weather conditions proved too challenging for drivers since both Jack Doohan from Alpine and the safety car became necessary due to the driver crashes. A few corners later Carlos Sainz badly debuted with Williams by losing control which sent him crashing into the wall at the final corner thus finishing his race before starting his first run.
During the race Fernando Alonso lost control of his Aston Martin vehicle at Turn 6 which led to the second safety car intervention. Multiple vehicles reached their pit stops when McLaren used hard tires and Red Bull taking a gamble with medium tires for Verstappen. The whole field expected to see more rainfall because the dark clouds kept forming in the sky before the restart.
Heavy precipitation started to fall as soon as the safety car entered the pits station leaving many drivers caught by surprise. The McLaren drivers ended up off-track but Norris made it back to rejoin the race by switching to fresh intermediates as Piastri remained stuck on grass which caused him to drop several places. Silent rule granted Verstappen the first place before Hamilton advanced past Leclerc before taking second spot and passing Albon and Tsunoda.
Ferrari had to take a dangerous strategic move which left Leclerc and Hamilton driving on slicks while other drivers changed to intermediates. Both Gabriel Bortoleto and Liam Lawson lost control and crashed which triggered another safety car while the Ferarri drivers suffered from the late pit stop penalty.
The final restart appeared at the beginning of the last five laps and Norris took the lead back with Verstappen closely following him. Red Bull’s driver attempted everything during the last laps to make Norris make a mistake yet the McLaren driver remained composed and secured his first victory this season. Verstappen had to accept second place as George Russell completed the podium after managing his car skillfully to avoid contact.
The ninth-place finish made McLaren experience contrasting results because the Australian driver Piastri competed at his home race. Las Vegas 1 served against Piastri who demonstrated quick pace before being affected by his track excursion and strategic missteps which made him miss out on competing for a podium finish. The Williams driver Alex Albon drove competently to reach fourth after Andrea Kimi Antonelli received a penalty for unsafe pit release.
Both Leclerc and Hamilton finished eighth and tenth for Ferrari when their strategic bet resulted in a disappointing outcome. Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg delivered a strong seventh-place finish which marked one of the best results of his recent racing career. Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll crossed the finish line as the sixth-place finisher.
The rookie drivers lost their cars in the wet weather race despite the challenging track conditions, resulting in Hadjar, Doohan and Bortoleto and Lawson leaving track. The 2025 rookies experienced their first Formula 1 baptism by fire as they learned the harsh reality that the sport shows no mercy to novices under changing track conditions.
Through this win Norris demonstrated to McLaren’s competitors that the team will be a major force this season because McLaren achieved strong results during dry and wet races. The racing performance of Max Verstappen in Melbourne revealed that Red Bull Racing might no longer control the championship race in 2023 like they did in previous years.
The upcoming season of 2025 has started shaping up even though teams are leaving the current race. The first move belongs to McLaren but Red Bull shows clear signs of launching its response. Based on the Australian Grand Prix performance this season demonstrated strong signs of becoming one of the most unpredictable and thrilling seasons in recent times.
