FORMULA E’S FUTURE: TRADITIONAL CIRCUITS OVER STREETS CIRCUITS?

In the world of Formula E, a debate is brewing regarding the series’ future. Should Formula E continue as a street racing series or make a transition to traditional circuits This question has sparked discussions among teams, drivers, and fans, weighing the pros and cons of each approach.

Formula E, known for its thrilling street races, recently introduced an interim United States circuit at Portland International Raceway. With a successful debut, Portland is now set to host a second Formula E race next year. There is even speculation that it could become a regular venue, possibly in conjunction with a higher-profile US city like Los Angeles by 2025.

However, the performance of Formula E cars on traditional circuits like Portland has led to a debate about whether it showcased the championship in a favourable light. While the Gen3 Formula E cars demonstrated their nimbleness and speed during qualifying, the race itself, due to limited usable energy and the flowing nature of the track without natural energy-regenerating braking zones, appeared comparatively slower. This contrast in pace may have given some viewers the impression that electric cars were less advanced.

Despite this perception, it is important to give Formula E and Portland the benefit of the doubt. When the racing was at its peak, it provided an exhilarating spectacle. Yet, it could not match the excitement and thrill of navigating the narrow streets of circuits like Diriyah or Rome, where the tight confines add an extra element of danger and excitement for both spectators and TV viewers. Street circuits have long been the heart and soul of Formula E. They offer numerous advantages, including accessibility, as races can be held in city centres, bringing the action closer to fans. The challenging nature of street circuits, with their traffic and obstacles, adds an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the races.

On the other hand, traditional circuits have their own set of advantages. With longer layouts, traditional circuits provide more overtaking opportunities, allowing for thrilling battles on the track. They also feature larger runoff areas, reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing safety.

In recent years, Formula E has experimented with races on traditional circuits. The 2021 season included a double-header at the modified Valencia Street Circuit, which offered a more traditional layout. These races were well-received by fans and drivers alike, suggesting that Formula E could continue exploring traditional circuits in the future.

However, there are challenges associated with hosting races on traditional circuits. The costs of setting up and operating such events are generally higher. Additionally, traditional circuits may not be as accessible to fans since they are often situated outside city centres. Ultimately, the decision about whether Formula E should shift towards traditional circuits is a complex one. Several factors need to be carefully considered, including the cost implications, accessibility for fans, safety measures, the excitement factor, and the marketing potential.

It is likely that Formula E will strike a balance between street races and traditional circuits moving forward. The series must evaluate all the relevant factors before making a definitive decision about its future direction. By carefully weighing the pros and cons of each approach, Formula E can ensure that it continues to captivate audiences while pushing the boundaries of electric motorsport.
