Williams is bringing in an up-and-coming F2 driver, Franco Colapinto, to replace Logan Sargeant for the remainder of the F1 season. The decision occurs after the Sargeant unfortuned year this year which included an accident in the practice in the Dutch GP that affected the Williams upgraded package car.
This meant that team principal James Vowles, growing increasingly impatient with Sargeant’s inability to score points, decided that a change was in order. In the Williams’ case, they had other potential candidates like Mick Schumacher and Liam Lawson, but they opted to promote Colapinto from the Driver Academy.
Vowles said, ‘Signing a driver mid season is never straightforward, but as a team that wholeheartedly supports the development of young talent, we believe this is the strongest option for us to fight it out in a competitive midfield pack. ’Franco has good chance to demonstrate his abilities in the final nine Races.’
The young talent still has some potential in his junior career having scored a problem-free win in the Imola sprint race this year. In essence, now that he is at the pinnacle of motorsport via Formula One, the world will wait to see how he will fare.
