It was one of the engine races so far in 2023, with the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona being extremely exciting. There were thrilling tactical moves, solid emotions, bittersweet turns and fresh insight from midfield players. The final result was all about the top leaders, but all of the teams added excitement in the hot Spanish climate.
The story of the race was largely about McLaren’s strong results. It was Oscar Piastri who made the most news over the weekend. Championship points were key and this calm win secured his place as high as possible in the standings. The speed shown by McLaren on a track where they could have struggled shut up many critics and other racers. In the decisive part of Q3, Piastri drove smoothly and executed a strong lap and others had trouble. Throughout the race, unshaken, he took the lead and nothing interrupted his control, not even the late safety car.
But the big drama was Max Verstappen, as his mood turned sour and the race went wrong for him. Because of his poor grip and clutch, along with slow lapped cars, he encountered George Russell and the pair had a controversial accident at Turn 5. Emotions seemed to guide Verstappen’s driving in this race which is unusual, although not unheard of. The team was given a penalty, though the more notable point was how much the driver struggled to balance being aggressive and in control. Usually cautious when driving, Verstappen gave up some points and seemed slightly less cool than usual.
Down the line, athletes had a good time and thought back on what they achieved. After a slow start to the season, Sauber finally enjoyed a good result. Nico Hülkenberg thanks to cleverly using his tyres and a timely appearance of the safety car, managed to place fifth. It was relief and optimism for the Swiss-based team when Fernando drove fast, showing they had a competitive car.
Mercedes saw a mixed set of results. George Russell skillfully moved ahead of Verstappen after the restart and finished in fourth. Once more, the team was undermined by reliability, as Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s drive ended early because of a suspected engine issue. Even after four races, the rookie is still working on getting used to things and the second retirement under three races will hurt him, along with the engineers.
The team’s main goal was to make up for their disappointing performance in 2018. After going through some tough luck, Fernando Alonso got his first points in front of a home crowd. He drove fast, risking it all in a car that was not built to be a top finisher and the arrival of the safety car worked out in his favor. With Stroll not able to race because of a hand problem, Alonso did his best for the team and they got their result.
The weekend was not an easy one for the Ferrari team. Early on, Charles Leclerc made contact with Verstappen and his car was damaged, but Lewis Hamilton as a Ferrari driver had a terrible race. He said that was “the worst race of his career” out of the 365 times he started a race. I couldn’t control the car very well, it was too slow and the strategy also made things more difficult. Even though he was offered a final chance to change things, Hamilton’s words showed how much he wanted only to go home: “I’m done, I’m going home.”
Among the newer players, IsackHadjar kept proving that he has more experience than his age suggests. Always careful on the track, he maintained place with the middle of the pack and never disappointed. Though his better tyres helped him for a while, Hulkenberg got overtaken after the safety car. Hadjar’s fine results on the other hand continue to impress everyone.
It was Williams’ smooth actions that mainly started to fall away. While they tried a new front wing to stay up to date with new regulations, their problems with high-downforce tracks still remained. Carlos Sainz was disappointed with his home race, finishing 14th and Alex Albon didn’t reach the checkered flag. Barcelona stopped the positive trends that had been developing in the team.
The weekend showed the main trends of that season, including growing rivalry among the teams in the fight for the title, difficulties from varying tyre and track surfaces and problems with staying consistent for all. Though McLaren finished in confident form, others had hard questions to deal with, some with bruised feelings and Hamilton was eager to look ahead.
The Spanish Super Cup’s first game marked the beginning of many new twists and rivalry revivals. The championship has moved on and the Spanish Grand Prix will be remembered for more than the winner, also for the insights it gave about the upcoming shifts in 2025 Formula 1.
