KTM, the renowned motorcycle manufacturer, has recently confirmed that Pedro Acosta, the
highly talented young rider, will be making his MotoGP debut with the team in the 2024
season. However, the specific team Acosta will be riding for remains a mystery, as KTM team
manager Francesco Guidotti has teased a “surprise” regarding the decision.
At present, KTM has two riders already contracted for the 2024 season: Brad Binder and Jack
Miller. Both riders are part of the KTM Factory Racing team, making it highly unlikely that
either of them will be displaced to accommodate Acosta. Therefore, speculation has arisen
regarding the potential options for Acosta’s seat in MotoGP.
One possibility is that Acosta could join the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, taking over
Miller’s position. However, this would require the team to terminate Miller’s contract
prematurely, as he is currently contracted until the end of the 2024 season. Another
plausible scenario is Acosta joining the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing team, possibly replacing
Pol Espargaro. Espargaro, who is contracted until 2024, is presently recovering from injuries
sustained in a crash earlier this year and is not expected to return to racing until later in the
season.
Another option for Acosta’s MotoGP seat could be KTM’s satellite team, the Red Bull KTM
team, which currently competes in Moto2. This move would provide Acosta with the
opportunity to continue his development within the KTM family, but in the premier class.
The decision by KTM to keep Acosta within their ranks demonstrates the team’s confidence
in his immense potential. At just 19 years old, Acosta has already showcased exceptional
talent in Moto2 this season and expressed his desire to graduate to the premier class,
despite KTM initially preferring him to remain in Moto2. Acosta’s remarkable achievements
include winning the Moto3 World Championship in his rookie season, further solidifying his
reputation as one of the most promising young riders in the world.
The reasons behind KTM’s commitment to retaining Acosta as a KTM rider are multifaceted.
Firstly, they believe that Acosta represents the future of the team and want to provide him
with the best possible chance to succeed. Additionally, by keeping him within their own
team, KTM can protect him from potential approaches by rival teams seeking to secure his
services. Furthermore, remaining within the KTM family will enable Acosta to benefit from
the team’s support and expertise, aiding in his continued development as a rider.
While the specific details surrounding Acosta’s MotoGP team for the 2024 season are still
unknown, it is evident that KTM is incredibly enthusiastic about his potential and
determined to harness his talent for future success. MotoGP fans and the racing community
eagerly await the unveiling of this “surprise” decision, which will undoubtedly shape
Acosta’s journey as he steps into the highly competitive world of MotoGP.
