Liverpool collapse exposed after Galatasaray loss

Jamie Carragher rants about Liverpool collapse having succumbed to Galatasaray 1-0 warns about Slot being dropped order and he admonishes Slot to fix the Reds before it is too late

The whistle at an intimidating red Williams RAMS Park in Istanbul did not only mark a 1-0 loss over Galatasaray by Liverpool in the UEFA champions league; it spelt out a fresh wave of self-identity and lack of confidence at Liverpool. It was not just a bad result but a chaotic, structurally inferior performance of Liverpool losing to Victor Osimhen on a penalty in the 16th minute which has immediately precipitated a high-stakes, popular investigation into the tenure of Arne Slot and his failure to manage Liverpool properly. The head of the feral gang of worthless dead mules is club legend Jamie Carragher, who has categorically said that he is not a fan of a top club, and has insisted on drastic measures at once, including the dismissing of summer recruit Florian Wirtz.

The game was a close one and a stressful one between which the slim margins ended up working against Liverpool weakness. The madness started early when Dominik Szoboszlai, confusingly used as an improvised full-back on one of the many subriot in a rotational gambit by Slot, felled Baris Alper Yilmaz in the box. Osimhen easily converted the next penalty to his usual style. Since then, it seems that Liverpool defence, which included Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, appeared weak and constantly vulnerable. The fact that Slot decided starting with Mohamed Salah benching only contributed to the tactical discomfort, pointing to a certain amount of tinkering which turned out not to help the team to stabilize.

The second half made the misery. After several crucial saves, Goalkeeper Alisson was taken off after being injured and later replaced by a substitute Hugo Ekitika. Wave after wave of frantic assault by the visitors was repulsed, meantime Wirtz and Alexander Isak made ground, but the defence of Galatasaray stood firm. A later lifeline came in the shape of a penalty given due to a challenge onkonate but was overturned on a review, which showed that Wilfried Singo got the ball first. That verdict capped Liverpool with a second consecutive loss in any competition.

This pervasive instability was what attracted the stinging reproach with which Carragher attacked it. The former defender complained that Liverpool are now playing “basketball,” which is manic, end to end and has no structure whatsoever in terms of organized play. This has not, he says, been the characteristic of a champion side. Carragher sounded a warning that the mystery of the collapse of Liverpool has always been brewing since its inception and that Arne Slot now had to perform by earning his money through straightening out the cracks that have come to light in the club.

Of Florian Wirtz he spared himself nothing. The summer signing, who the club has invested millions of dollars in, has not even been able to find his feet and Carragher was blunt when he told him that Wirtz was not at the races at all and ought to be on the bench right now. In the structural mess that Carragher has prescribed, it will be easy, going back and restoring the defensive baseness and containing assuredness of last season, on the midfield. The central focus of his argument is that new attacking talent has been achieved at the cost of defensive stability saying, they haven’t lost anything in the future but they have lost so much defensively.

The tactical fault lines cannot be ignored Szoboszlai was misplaced, there was a complete lack of coherence between the midfield and defence, there was an overdependence on those players that are either struggling or injured, poor injury management during the night all point to systemic issues.

And two defeats now follows–a thing unfamiliar in the present day at Anfield–confidence is thus destroyed to the point of grief. The impending game with Chelsea on this weekend is a very important, early-season examination of Slot. The manager needs to immediately in still defensive control and solve the problem of an imbalance in the midfield, which has been exacerbated by the fact that Alisson is unavailable in the match. Now drop Wirtz will become a major talking point one pressurizing Slot to change the key one. In order to prevent falling too far out of the field of title contention, the Reds need to meet a steady zing condition soon. The London debacle at Istanbul was not merely the outcome alone, but it served as a warning that the club has become a current state of a mess, and needs solving, instantaneously.
