Marc Marquez adds to his injury tally, continues to believe in Honda

Marc Marquez stands by his decision to ride with Honda till 2024, despite a disappointing and injury-laden 2023 season.

Following the most recent DNF at Mugello, Marquez locked himself in the HRC truck before heading to the garage to speak with his team. Reportedly, he asked for several changes in the one-month gap between the French and Italian GPs, which Honda failed to deliver.

During a press conference, he stated, “It’s clear that if you don’t bring new things, you can’t test them on the track. It’s difficult to know what’s going on in Japan. But since we’ve started the season, we’ve only received one new chassis, little else.”

The trouble, however, is more significant than Marc Marquez. Fellow drivers are concerned about Honda’s capabilities, with doubts looming about their safety after numerous crashes and injuries. Marquez remarked, “The worrying thing is that all of us Honda riders are crashing, and that’s what we have to try to change with a view to the future.”

Despite this, Marquez defended his decision to stay with the team and commented on his 4-year contract. “At that moment [2019], it wasn’t a mistake. I still don’t believe it was a mistake,” said Marquez. “I couldn’t imagine I would break my arm, that I would have four surgeries, that there would be a pandemic, that the pandemic would affect Asia more than Europe. … All these things, you cannot control. The target from that four years was to win four championships.”

While Marquez has praised Honda for how the team allowed him to recuperate and recover from his injuries, many are questioning how long he can remain with them unless they start to turn the tide.

Team Manager Alberto Puig was forced to comment on the state of affairs after Marquez was ruled out of the Dutch GP due to a sprint-race crash. “We have a contract, but every person is free to do what they want in life,” said Puig. “And Honda is not a company that wants to have people who are not happy being at Honda.”

Marquez reiterated his need to recover and declined to comment further on his relationship with the team. He stated, “You cannot decide things about your future when you are in such a condition. During this month and a half I need to rebuild my body and the mental side.”

With Marquez out of contention yet again and no substantial promises from Repsol Honda, it remains to be seen if Marquez exits the team as soon as he can or continues to race with the manufacturer.
