Max Verstappen’s Record-Breaking Win in Mexico City Grand Prix

Max Verstappen expressed his deep sense of pride after achieving a remarkable 16th victory of the season at the Mexico City Grand Prix, surpassing his previous record of 15 wins. The reigning world champion started the race from the third position on the grid and made an impressive start, immediately challenging the pole-sitter, Charles Leclerc, into the first corner. Unfortunately, his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, found himself out of contention after a collision with Leclerc, but Verstappen managed to stay clear of any trouble and went on to secure a relatively uncontested win.

During the race, there were some intriguing strategy changes. Verstappen initially planned a two-stop strategy but opted for a one-stop strategy after a red flag was triggered following a heavy crash involving Kevin Magnussen. Verstappen executed a strong restart, securing his path to victory.

Reflecting on his performance, Verstappen shared his thoughts, “I believe that the strong start certainly worked in my favor during the first stint, especially as I had initially planned for a two-stop strategy. This decision would have given me a few extra seconds, which would have looked impressive on paper if we had stuck to it. Managing the tires on this track is always challenging, but our pace was decent. We decided to pit a bit earlier, and even on the hard tires, we were competitive. It would have been fascinating to see how much faster I could have gone on a fresh set of hard tires towards the end of the race, but the strategy was looking promising.”

He continued, “However, the red flag changed everything, and we had to start from scratch. Once again, it was crucial to make a good start and maintain the lead into Turn 1, which we successfully did. After that, it was all about managing our pace to preserve the tires, take care of the car, and ensure the brakes were in good shape.”

Verstappen also addressed the intense battle with Leclerc and Perez into Turn 1, stating that he wasn’t nervous at all. “It’s not the first time I’ve found myself two-wide or even three-wide into Turn 1 here,” he admitted. “We all trust each other on the track, and while we push our limits while braking into the corner, it was all under control. I did notice something happening on my outside, but fortunately, we managed to stay clear of any trouble on the inside.”

Max Verstappen’s record-breaking victory in Mexico City was a testament to his skill and composure on the track, setting the stage for an electrifying season in Formula 1.
