Porsche’s E Strategy for the 2023/24 Season

In light of several VW Group manufacturers exiting the sport, Porsche finds itself at a crucial juncture, contemplating its role as a constructor. Anticipation surrounds the forthcoming “Gen-4” regulations slated for implementation in the 2026/27 season. Should these regulations offer the desired stability to the esteemed German automaker, Porsche will elect to remain. Conversely, if the regulations prove unsatisfactory, we may witness yet another departure by a VW Group automaker.

Porsche showcased commendable performance in the initial races of the 2023 season, securing podium finishes in the first five races and emerging victorious in three of them. However, a decline in form became evident following the Brazil race, with Porsche’s highest finishing positions ranging between 5th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.

During the Monaco weekend, the German team encountered considerable challenges, leading to a disheartening afternoon. This unfortunate turn of events resulted in the loss of both championship leads. Pascal Wehrlein relinquished the lead to Nick Cassidy, while Porsche surrendered its position to Envision Racing.

As the season progresses, it is expected that the team’s performance will dwindle during the second half. This unfortunate timing exacerbates the predicament faced by Porsche, as they contemplate their future in the sport. Regrettably, the current results fail to facilitate a decisive determination of whether Porsche will persist in Formula E. All eyes are on Porsche, given the recent departures of prominent and historic brands such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, eagerly awaiting their next move.

Porsche holds a significant position within the Formula E landscape, and its potential withdrawal would reverberate as a substantial blow to the sport and the team itself. Failure to secure a top-three position may prompt the VW Group to reassess their commitment to the sport and the brand as a whole. Having already missed out on the opportunity to join Formula One due to their separation from Red Bull, a lacklustre performance in this Formula E season could be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back.
