Controversy Surrounds Norris’ Qatar Qualifying Lap as Hamilton Questions Track Limits

In the heat of the Qatar Grand Prix qualifying session, a cloud of controversy emerged as Lewis Hamilton voiced his disapproval of Lando Norris’s deleted lap time due to track limits. The Mercedes driver, who initially found himself in P5 on the grid, was baffled by the stewards’ decision to penalize Norris, despite benefiting from his demotion on the starting grid.

Norris, who was initially set to start on the second row, had his fastest lap invalidated for exceeding track limits at Turn 10, ultimately pushing him down to 10th place on the grid. As a result, Hamilton was promoted to third, just behind George Russell, after another driver, Oscar Piastri, received a penalty as well.

Hamilton’s view was that Norris should not have had his lap time deleted, as he believed the McLaren driver actually lost time by going off the track. In Hamilton’s words, “When you go beyond the highest point of the kerb, we do lose time, so I’m not really sure at this track if we need to have track limits.” He questioned the necessity of track limits at this specific circuit and suggested that the white line marking track limits should be reconsidered.

Regarding his own performance, Hamilton emphasized the importance of the result for Mercedes in the Constructors’ standings, where they are aiming to increase their points gap over Ferrari. He noted that the team’s second and third-place starting positions were significant achievements, despite a challenging qualifying session marked by tricky wind conditions.

Hamilton also discussed the uncertainty surrounding race pace due to the unique circumstances, mentioning that it was a bit of a learning curve for all the teams. He expressed his determination to give it his all and maximize his points haul in the race.

Ultimately, the controversy surrounding track limits and the stewards’ decisions added an extra layer of intrigue to the Qatar Grand Prix. As the race day approached, the focus shifted to the action on the track, with Hamilton looking to capitalize on his advantageous starting position and Mercedes aiming to maintain their lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship.
