Sergio Perez had a tough weekend at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Despite his best efforts, he could only secure P8. This result came after a difficult qualifying session and a risky strategy that didn’t pay off as hoped. Perez believes this race was an exception to his usual performance.

Perez started in P11 after a challenging qualifying session. Unlike most of the field who began the race on medium tires, Perez opted for the hard compound. This choice aimed to extend his opening stint, but it came with risks. On Lap 18, Perez veered off into the gravel, losing crucial seconds.

The decision to go long on hard tires meant Perez didn’t pit until Lap 38 of 63. After switching to medium tires, he rejoined the race in 11th position. Perez managed to overtake Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda, ultimately finishing in eighth place.

When asked if P8 was the best possible result, Perez confirmed it was. The Red Bull driver admitted they took a gamble with the strategy, hoping for a timely Safety Car. Unfortunately, an off-track excursion compromised his race further, costing him valuable seconds and some damage to the car.

Before Imola, Perez had shown consistent performance in the 2024 season. He believes the difficulties faced at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari were a one-off. Despite the strong build-up to qualifying, they couldn’t execute a proper session, which impacted their race strategy and result.
