Suryakumar Yadav Good Headache Over Team Balance

Suryakumar Yadav good headache that is a phrase which best describes the mood in the T20I camp of India which is about to play a series with Australia in Canberra. According to the captain of India, the key problem facing his team at this point in time is not a shortage in talent but rather a glut of talent. Having several of the players competing in the positions and having good bench strength in all the departments Suryakumar describes it as a good headache. His lines bring into emphasis an unfathomable rarity in the Indian cricket, chiefly the richness of depth such that you can find it hard to drop the current players on the score sheet, but have to just to create harmony.

India are about to face Australia in their first T20I but Suryakumar can be seen as very self composed and clear. This person has clarified that the goal of the team comes first before any personal desire. To him victory matches in India is more impractical than individual form and selection discussions.

During his pre match press conference, Suryakumar confessed that it is not always easy to make a final decision on which players to include in a 15-member squad. It was a nice thing to get such a variety of choices, fast bowers or spinners, said he with a smile. Everybody is elastic to No. 7 anybody can bat anywhere. It is somewhat challenging when picking the squad, yet in this desire, the environment is to win.

The comments made by the captain show that there was a tight knit group in the side a culture of integrity and empathy. The selection process used by Suryakumar is quite simple, the team combination will always be the first. Then said he, take what you please, go ahead and win the match. Even where the person has performed well in the previous two matches, and he does not fit in the plan in the next one, the player realizes. That is where we have gotten to.

This attitude is an indicator of maturity among the group, these are the players who know their roles, who respect them when they are supposed to make choice they are always available when the opportunity arises. Even Suryakumar commented that he has plenty of friends and that it becomes easier to have such difficult conversations when he has to inform the players that they are not in the XI.

He underlined the need to be ready. By the case of Rinku Singh as the example, he remarked, that during the Asia Cup Rinku did not receive an opportunity but on the last when he got it, he was left with three or four records to make, and he completed the game. That is our attitude 0 we would all like to be ready.

This ability to think clearly is what makes leadership of Suryakumar refreshing. He is not only controlling egos but he is even steering ambition to team spirit. All he tells all the members of his squad is to be ready, hungry, and focused on remaining together.

Suryakumar is however also ecstatic about the re-emergence of the Jasprit Bumrah who sat out on the most recent ODI series due to rest. He commended Bumrah as an excellent leader in the unit of bowling by referring to him as the guy who will take charge. Just like we have seen in the Asia cup, he bowled at least two overs during the power punishment. It is good that he lifts up his hand. It will be a good challenge against Australia, Suryakumar said.

He also emphasized on the Australian experience of Bumrah. Of us all he has been the most active of the players. He is aware of how making preparations, adapting and delivering when the times are critical. It is very nice to have him in the team again.

The inclusion of Bumrah surely gives India confidence that they can turn-around the recent fortunes in Australia which they lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 and the ODI series 2-1 in the same month earlier.

Lastly, upon being questioned on whether such defeats would have any influence on the T20I mindset, Suryakumar ruled out any form of connection. It is a different form, he said vehemently. The formula remains the same and the format is not the same Test, ODI, T20 are entirely other brand of cricket. We shall still continue with our fearless brand of T20 cricket.

He admitted that the situation in Australia, England and South Africa never ceases to challenge adaptability but takes it as an opportunity and not a problem. You need to train, learn how to run, how to shoot in such circumstances. That’s non-negotiable. It is a nice test to take and it will be pleasant to play five T20s here.

This has been questioned even by his own form given a lowly Asia Cup when he could manage just 72 runs in seven inings. But he remains unfazed. “I’ve been working really hard. There were good sessions both in my home country and in Australia. I feel okay, man, I feel good. There will be a time when runs will come but the team goal is most important. I take one game at a time.”

It is that attitude that characterizes his style leadership he believes in process, selfless and focused more on the team results and not his own figures.

One area that India are adamant in is the fielding which led to their setback in Asia Cup. Suryakumar acknowledged that it has been a priority to the team. They do drop catches it is all a part of the game. However, matters of what you do after that are relevant he explained. The current session was optional, but all people came and worked on the fielding. That shows commitment.”

He included that he would like India to be the best fielding team across the globe. Occasionally, it happens that, batting and bowling do not gel but you can win matches with fielding. Hard work and will carry more weight than ability.

Finally, the symbol of the strength of the Indian depth and good competition in the team is the headache experienced by Suryakumar Yadav. His pragmatism, i.e. concentrating on team combinations, player preparedness and goal intending should auger well with T20I prospects of India. His composed confidence and purpose as he takes his side against Australia could be the very ingredients on which India could push their winning streak of the shortest form.
