Toyota’s GR Yaris Rally1 Unveiling for WRC 2024

Toyota has recently revealed the highly anticipated GR Yaris Rally1 that will be a key contender in the 2024 World Rally Championship (WRC). This new iteration boasts a distinctive matte black livery, a departure from the iconic red, white, and black colors that have characterized Toyota’s WRC presence since their return in 2017.

The eye-catching matte black livery is a bold choice by Toyota, breaking away from the conventional color scheme. According to Toyota president Akio Toyoda, the shift was prompted by a desire for uniqueness. “Until now it was red and white because it represented Japan, but there are many cars with similar colors, so we asked for a change.”

This new color scheme will not be exclusive to the WRC; it will also grace Toyota’s GR010 Hypercar entries in the 2024 World Endurance Championship. This strategic move aligns the visual identity across different racing platforms.

Toyota confirmed that the WRC driver line-up remains unchanged for the upcoming season. Notably, newly crowned two-time world rally champion Kalle Rovanpera will join Sebastien Ogier, although his participation will be limited to a partial campaign.

Despite the GR Yaris dominating nine out of 13 rounds this year, Toyota is gearing up for the 2024 season with planned upgrades. Toyota’s technical director, Tom Fowler, revealed, “We have a plan for next season already in place to bring some upgrades.”

Fowler acknowledged the competitive landscape, stating, “We see that the main situation now is generally uncomfortable performance compared to Hyundai at the moment.” Toyota aims to address this and enhance its performance across various rally conditions.

In anticipation of the 2024 WRC season, rival teams Hyundai and M-Sport-Ford are set to unveil their respective i20 N and Puma Rally1 cars in the new year. M-Sport is scheduled to reveal its Puma at the Autosport International Show from 11-14 January.

Toyota’s unveiling of the new-look GR Yaris Rally1 signals their commitment to staying at the forefront of WRC competition. With a bold matte black livery, an unchanged driver line-up, and planned upgrades, Toyota is poised for an exciting 2024 season.
