IndyCar is committed to pushing the boundaries of safety in motorsport, and this weekend’s Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend at Iowa Speedway will witness a major step forward. In collaboration with Dallara, a key partner, IndyCar is introducing a mandatory update to enhance the strength and retention of wheel hubs on NTT INDYCAR SERIES cars.

The revamped rear-wheel bearing retaining nut, boasting a 60 percent increase in strength over its predecessor, will be distributed to all entries in the series and made compulsory for use at the Iowa doubleheader. This vital improvement follows an in-depth analysis of an incident at the 2023 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, which involved Andretti Autosport’s No. 27 car and Arrow McLaren’s No. 6 car, leading to the loss of the left rear wheel assembly on the No. 27.

“We take safety incredibly seriously, and this update is a significant stride in ensuring such an incident doesn’t recur,” stated Jay Frye, INDYCAR President, lauding Dallara’s unwavering commitment to partnership.

Dallara’s meticulous analysis of the Indy 500 accident at their headquarters in Italy paved the way for this crucial improvement. While the wheel tether system, reinforced with high-performance Zylon material, didn’t fail during the May 28 incident, IndyCar remains steadfast in exploring every avenue for making the sport even safer.

Stefano dePonti, CEO of Dallara, emphasized the joint mission shared by Dallara and IndyCar to maintain and continuously improve safety standards across all racing series. He further assured that the new components are designed to bolster the strength of the corner in the rare event of a repeat of such a unique set of circumstances.

The IndyCar community is excited to witness these enhanced safety measures in action at the Hy-Vee Homefront 250 presented by Instacart on Saturday, July 22, with the doubleheader continuing on Sunday, July 23, with the Hy-Vee One Step 250 presented by Gatorade. With the collaboration of all stakeholders, IndyCar is committed to advancing safety and ensuring that every driver can compete at their best, with confidence and peace of mind. Let the exhilarating races continue with safety at the forefront!
