Worst Start in 52 Years Wolverhampton West: Nuno Pressured as Defeats Pile Up.

West Ham Worst Start in 52 Years – that is the sad truth in respect of the Hammers who were shattered on Friday night at Leeds by a 2 goal margin. This outcome was the third defeat in a row of the new manager Nuno Espirito Santo who is still without a win after replacing Graham Potter in September.

The recent defeat puts West Ham in the 19 th position in the premier league table and is yet to achieve a single win this season. That victory over Nottingham Forest, shortly after Nuno’s departure to his previous club, was ironic and it gave a sadistic turn to their dreadful season.

The four-point ratio of nine games is the lowest returning on record at this point of a season and is comparable to other comparable periods of low performance of the club such as in 1932-33 of the second tier and 1973-74 of the first. At both instances, the Hammers escaped relegation by the slender margin a figure that does not bring much relief to the supporters who were experiencing another crisis.

Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed with the mandate to stabilize a sinking ship but he is currently struggling with fires mere weeks of his appointment. West Ham have gained him one point only since he was appointed, a 1-1 draw with Everton, and have been as disorganized in every department as it was possible.

Nuno Espirito Santo is appointed to the mission of steadying a sinking ship when this time he is fighting fires only weeks in a new office. After his appointment, West Ham have earned just one point, a draw against everton 1-1 and have appeared disorganized in each of the departments.

The Portuguese manager did not hold back to speak after the defeat against Leeds.

And there are far too many things wrong in our club, unfortunately. We have no right to be hiding behind them. It is up to everybody to be responsible, said Nuno. Admitted were the lapses of tact and defensive, had been plagued his side and he added It was not our defensive situations and I felt like we could use a striker to hold the ball. Probably that is not the best of me. Such errors do not make the Premier League acceptable.

Nuno is now the only west hammer manager to lose his first four premier league matches with Manuel Pellegrini (2018). His aggravation was eminent when he demanded the shift in attitude, effort, and preparation. There is quality there, there is time, but about nothing will be accomplished until we change. We need to be more prepared, work harder and be different in the game. Things will not reform itself, he said.

Defensive as well as Tactical Woes Accumulate.

Again, the absence of ambition has attracted attention, including West Ham have only scored seven goals in the entire season however their defensive performance is even worse. The Hammers have received 20 goals the second-widest number in the league, four more than the bottom club Wolves.

Their Achilles heel has been set-pieces. Amazingly, nine of its goals have been in corners, three times higher than any other team. It is a record-breaking weakness, the lowest defensive performance of corners at this point in a Premier League season.

Ex-West Ham and England goalkeeper Rob Green complained on an interview on Sky Sports:

It was a repeat on Monday night with Brentford a sort of figure we didn’t make out inside-out full backs, outside in full backs. It did not work then, and they reiterated it.

Green also doubted the in-game management of Nuno:

I do not know how you can make 5 replies and come out with a better XI and shape than you initially had. None of it makes sense. They are fooling about, that is dangerous.

In fact tactical disorientation has been a constant trend in West Ham. The move to have Ollie Scarles and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on different sides of the field failed as the team was left vulnerable at the center and at the sides. Leeds took the advantage of these lapses, having charged into goal twice in 15 minutes and never actually gotten off track.

The fall of West Ham has been precipitous and shocking. They had only the previous season been taking part in competitions in Europe and had a strong defensive structure. At this point, they appear to be a team that lacks purpose, identity and faith.

Nuno Espirito Santo who came in with reputation of having organized defensively compact teams has not left his mark. In its place, there has been a lack of permanency in team composition and experimentation in tactics, which has contributed further to the crisis.

The patience of its supporters is becoming unnerved. It is a state of anxiety rather than optimism in the London Stadium. Failure to make performances would see immediate results as the club may find themselves involved in a relegation struggle that many people never expected when the season began.
