Penske After a season where the team has been finding it tough to find consistency in results it was a toughly-earned win by Power and his first of the season and only win to date for Penske in 2025. As he seeks to discuss a new deal with the club the veteran Australian, who has not been ruled in or out, sent a resounding message that he is not finished yet.
Even in the initial laps the race came down to the strategy, volition, and nerves. Power was involved in a scorching three way scrap with Alex Palou and Christian Lundgaard. Every stint was like an actual game of chess in terms of fuel consumption, pit stop timing and manoeuvring traffic. The crucial passage came later on in the race when Power ran into back marker David Malukas- Ironically the person he was rumored to possibly be replaced at Penske with. Malukas waited long enough to pull aside and it was enough to break the rhythm of both Lundgaard and Palou, leaving Power with a tiny but important advantage. Having had a bit of comfortable breathing space of four laps to go, that was enough margin to stay on top and power across to his 45th career IndyCar victory.
The feelings of Power were clear after the checkered flag. In addressing media he admitted the difficulties of the season saying that mechanical failures and bad luck had kiboshed a number of promising jumps. He attributed this to his crew in terms of perseverance and the boost in morale that the win brought. He also made the effort to thank long term partners such as Verizon, an act that reiterates how much he feels a part of the team yet his future with the team is uncertain.
As Power was shaking hands and reveling in the glory of victory lane, the championship story line was being written right behind him. Just day marks from now, Alex Palou, who had already been the competition leader in the season of 2025, claimed his 4th title in the IndyCar category, as well as the 3rd consecutive one by finishing with the 3 rd position during the day. His season has been incredible to say the least with 11 podiums out of 15 races. Palou was aided to the title when his main contender Pato O Ward hit a costly failure nearing lap 22 that sent him down the field ten laps and eliminated his chance.
Final race in Portland presented two cross-cutting stories. As far as Power is concerned, it was a statement race which brought him to fore telling the viewers as to why he is one of the most successful drivers in the series. In the case of Palou, his victory was the most recent in series of dominance that is re-defining the modern IndyCar era. The two of them combined to make an already charged race one that will be recalled as dramatic and as important in the championship battle.
