After years of waiting for it, Aston Villa finally found the success they had all been hoping for with a triumph in the Europa League goals in Istanbul, where Unai Emery’s men won 3-0. This was no ordinary European night for Aston Villa fans. Its return to the top level of the European club scene and the formation of such memorable moments can only be chalked up to the win over Lille in the 1982 European Cup.

Villa didn’t disappoint neither at the Besiktas Park which was packed, and played a manner that only champion takes on display. It was a modern masterpiece completed by goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers. Villa boasted a huge following of almost 20,000 supporters who stormed the streets of Turkey for the final, bringing a flurry of claret and blue to the streets of Istanbul and its surrounding areas before kick-off.

First, there was a sense that this win will be important before the ball was even put on the pitch. Some of Villa’s celebrated 1982 European Cup winning team were there, including the legendary captain and top scorer Dennis Mortimer and Peter Withe. They would remind the club of its great history in Europe but by full-time it had written an unforgettable one itself.

To the annoyance of the betting bosses, it was Unaix Emery’s turn to demonstrate that he is one of the all-time best tournament managers in the European game. It was the Spaniard’s fifth Europa League championship and he already was the best-winning manager in the history of the competition. For Villa fans, most notable of all was the delivery of what he said he would bring to Villa Park in 2022 — trophies.

Emery has revolutionised Aston Villa. The club was in compromise at the bottom of the Premier League table when he joined. Less than four years later Villa are Champions League winners, and up next on the again in the Champions League for next season.

Finally, Emery revealed his tactical genius in the game. Villa began strong with vigour, keeping the ball and stopping Freiburg’s efforts from making headway. Tielemans had a splendid volley, after a well played short corner sequence, to put the game in front. The Belgian midfielder’s shot quelled some anxiety and changed the field of the game instantly.

But it was before half time when another vital goal was scored: it was a sensational effort from Emi Buendia into the upper corner. But twice Villa’s advantage was doubled as Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu was out of any chances. The strike brought forth unabashed emotion from Villa fans, who felt that the ball had come to their doorstep.

While that was on, Morgan Rogers pushed on in the second-half to grab the winning goal. The England international settled down to play and racked up a quick counter-attack to put the clinching to their Aston Villa side stem.England international did his posturing and just completed a rapid counter attack to leave the Aston Villa followers in celebrating shoes. Emery leapt onto the touchline as the substitutes ran onto the field knowing they had made history.

However, although some were concerned about Emiliano Martinez getting treatment to his finger during the warm up, Villa’s keeper didn’t appear to be stressed the whole game. Villa’s team had little to no pressure whatsoever to put in a serious challenge in Freiburg, and they did so from start to finish.

The end of the match brought tears to the eyes of players, coaches and fans alike. Players were received on court by Club owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens with Prince William on the sidelines as they received their trophies. Finally, Captain John McGinn was drawn to carry off the Europa League trophy, while Villa supporters savoured their first substantial trophies since the 1996 League Cup.

It was a pretty fitting expression of the mood, which was captured best by Morgan Rogers post-game. “What we’re coming up with will be in history,” he said. It’s a lovely moment for the fans and for the club, that’s sure.”

That is a statement that captured the essence of the incredible value that this victory brings Aston Villa. Defending manager Villa’s ascension under Emery is all the more impressive in an era that’s all about financial might in football. The club has been managing cautiously in the confines of the financial laws at the same time developing a competitive side that can pose a challenge to the continent’s fanciest and most competitive sides.

Lastly, Europa League success is a turning-point, not an end – Aston Villa. Villa bosses have never been more confident as their firecocks soar once more for Champions League football next season. Effectively, Emery’s enabled one of England’s biggest historic sides to regain pride, ambition & trophies.

Istanbul was for those who made the wait for 30 years for a big Scottish trophy the best place for their quest to be fulfilled.
