In the Bahrain Grand Prix, Albon encountered overheating issues, leading to a 15th-place finish that didn’t reflect the true potential of the car. Similarly, in Saudi Arabia, he narrowly missed out on points, securing an 11th-place finish. Despite finishing behind only the top teams and Hulkenberg’s Haas, Albon remains convinced that Williams has yet to unveil its full potential.
“Very simply, we’ve got a better car than last year,” Albon stated. “But so does everyone else. And I’d say Haas, in general, has been a bit more of a surprise package; they are more competitive.”
Acknowledging the team’s weaknesses, Albon expressed optimism about finding performance improvements over the next few races. He emphasized the untapped potential within the car and the team’s determination to unlock it.
“In 2023, Williams benefited from good straight-line speed, which made the car competitive on certain circuits,” Albon recalled. “This year, however, the team aimed to create a more consistent package, resulting in the loss of that speed advantage.”
The shift in performance dynamics has made overtaking more challenging for Albon, who noted the need to rely on cornering prowess rather than straight-line speed for maneuvers.
“We don’t have the straight-line speed like last year,” Albon explained. “So it’s actually really hard for us to overtake. I was quite surprised [in the Jeddah race]; I had to do all my overtaking in the corners, which is not normal for me! It was interesting.”
Despite the challenges, Albon remains optimistic about Williams’ prospects, emphasizing the team’s capacity for improvement and resilience.
“[It’s] not really how we want to start the season,” he admitted. “I think we wanted a bit more than this, but it’s only the beginning, and we can fight back.”
With the determination to overcome obstacles and refine their performance, Williams and Albon are poised to seize opportunities and climb up the ranks in the upcoming races.
