Alpine’s Interim Team Principal, Bruno Famin, has shared an update on the potential involvement of Mick Schumacher in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) next year. Schumacher recently completed a successful test at Jerez, raising the possibility of him racing for the French team in the WEC’s Hypercar category.
After departing from Haas at the end of last year, Schumacher has been serving as the reserve driver for Mercedes in the 2023 season. With Williams yet to confirm their 2024 lineup, Schumacher’s Formula 1 future remains uncertain. However, earlier this year, there were rumors linking him to Alpine’s sports car endeavors in the WEC.
During an interview in Mexico, Famin revealed that Schumacher had indeed tested Alpine’s WEC car at Jerez, and the results were promising. While nothing has been officially signed yet, Famin expressed his satisfaction with Schumacher’s overall performance and noted that discussions about a potential collaboration for the upcoming year are ongoing.
Famin also highlighted the positive trajectory of another Alpine driver, Pierre Gasly, who has shown improved results in recent races. Since the summer break, Gasly secured a podium in Zandvoort and delivered strong sixth-place finishes in Singapore and Austin.
Explaining Gasly’s improved performance, Famin pointed out that this is his debut season with Alpine, having previously been part of the Red Bull Racing program. Adapting to a new team and environment required time, but both Gasly and the team have made strides in finding the right synergy. As a result, they have fine-tuned their working relationship, leading to better results in the latter part of the season.
In summary, Mick Schumacher’s potential move to Alpine’s WEC team is under discussion, with a positive impression from his test in Jerez. Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly’s improved results can be attributed to his growing familiarity with the team and their enhanced working dynamics as the season has progressed.
