Some unexpected news from the Arrow McLaren camp! It looks like there’s been a last-minute change-up ahead of the upcoming IndyCar Series hybrid test at Homestead-Miami Speedway. David Malukas, one of the team’s drivers, unfortunately took a spill while mountain biking recently and ended up needing surgery on his wrist. Ouch! That means he’s out of action for a while – around six weeks, to be exact.
But fear not! In comes Callum Ilott to save the day. The 25-year-old British driver, who’s no stranger to the racing scene, has stepped up to fill in for David. Callum has been racing with Juncos Hollinger Racing for the past couple of seasons and has some solid results under his belt, including a couple of fifth-place finishes in 2023.
Even though Callum doesn’t currently have a seat locked in for the upcoming IndyCar season, he’s keeping busy in the meantime with the FIA World Endurance Championship, driving for Jota Sport in the Hypercar category.
In a classy move, Callum expressed his sympathy for David and the team, recognizing the tough spot they’re in just before the start of the season. He’s grateful for the chance to test with Arrow McLaren and wishes David a speedy recovery – a true sportsman, if you ask me.
As for the testing schedule, we’ve got a lineup that’s sure to get fans excited: Pato O’Ward will kick things off on Feb. 20, followed by Callum Ilott on Feb. 21, and Alexander Rossi will wrap things up on Feb. 22. It’s going to be three days of thrilling action!
Now, with David sidelined, Arrow McLaren is scrambling to figure out their lineup for the season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 8-10. But fear not – they’re on it. Team Principal Gavin Ward assured everyone that they’re working on some options for the No. 6 car while David recovers. Callum had a seat fitting last week and will be joining the team for testing in Homestead. The team is excited to work with him and hopeful they’ll have their St. Petersburg roster sorted out soon after.
Let’s all wish David Malukas a speedy recovery and give a warm welcome to Callum Ilott as he steps into the spotlight at Arrow McLaren. It’s going to be an exciting season!
