The recent Rome ePrix proved to be a rollercoaster for British driver Sam Bird in the FIA Formula E World Championship. Despite causing a crash that wrecked his car and those of five other competitors in Round 13, Bird bounced back with remarkable resilience, standing proudly on the podium just 24 hours later, clinching third place.
Opening up about his challenging form this season, Bird praised the Jaguar TCS Racing team for swiftly building him a new car after the crash, admitting, “There have been times recently where I’ve seen a very mediocre racing driver in the mirror. It’s been very difficult to pick myself up.” However, the thrill of being back on the podium brought relief and renewed determination.
While acknowledging his mistakes and errors throughout the season, Bird acknowledged that his speed hasn’t been lacking. He’s always been quick, but the errors have cost him dearly. With the London finale on the horizon, Bird sees another opportunity to race on home soil, where he has tasted victory before, back in Season 1 at Battersea Park. Ending Season 9 on a high is undoubtedly his goal.
The London E-Prix, now hosted at the ExCel, presents unique challenges with its half indoor and half outdoor circuit. The track spans just over 2km but features a staggering 20 corners, weaving both indoors and outdoors. Technical Manager Phil Charles of Jaguar TCS Racing highlighted the high grip of the indoor section, thanks to special grip-paint on the surface, while the outdoor section boasts tight and twisty corners, including kerbs at several apexes of medium speed chicanes.
For the drivers and teams, mastering the London circuit requires finding the right rhythm, attacking hard at kerbed chicanes and maintaining smoothness through the twisty sections. The revised last sector adds an interesting twist, testing how well the teams adapt to the new turns 15 to 18. With the two Championships on the line, the London E-Prix promises an exhilarating weekend of racing and a backdrop of intense competition.
As Bird and the Jaguar TCS Racing team prepare for the London showdown, the determined driver expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Racing on home soil will always be special for me, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the Jaguar I-TYPE 6 performs on this track. I’m going into this weekend feeling determined to do my best for the team in our quest for the team championship.”
With his sights set on success in front of his home crowd, Sam Bird’s journey promises to be one of excitement and tenacity, with the hope of ending Season 9 with a resounding victory. Fans can expect an electrifying finale as the Formula E Championship reaches its thrilling conclusion in London.
