Yamaha Confirms Cal Crutchlow’s Wildcard Appearance in MotoGP

Yamaha has officially announced that Cal Crutchlow, their seasoned British test rider, will participate as a wildcard entry in the Japanese MotoGP. The race is scheduled to take place at Motegi from September 29 to October 1, marking Crutchlow’s first competitive appearance of the season.

The addition of Cal Crutchlow to the grid presents Yamaha with a rare and valuable opportunity to gather crucial data, something they have missed out on this season due to the absence of a satellite team.

Yamaha’s team manager, Maio Meregalli, expressed his delight with Cal’s involvement, stating, “We are very happy with Cal.” Furthermore, Meregalli revealed that they are actively working to increase the number of training days in Europe. In light of their commitment to enhancing performance, the decision to have a wildcard entry at Motegi was already in place, and there is optimism for a potential second wildcard appearance in the future.

Although Cal Crutchlow retired at the end of 2020, he made a comeback last season, participating in six races as a replacement for the retiring Andrea Dovizioso. His return as a wildcard rider in this year’s Japanese MotoGP is eagerly anticipated by fans and the racing community alike.

Yamaha, much like their Japanese rival Honda, has faced challenges in keeping up with their European manufacturer counterparts throughout this season. However, with Crutchlow’s valuable input and participation, they aim to gain a competitive edge and strengthen their position on the grid.
