The desert heat beat down on Diriyah, but it was nothing compared to the heat of the battle raging on the track. I, Robin Frijns, grabbed the lead early on in my Envision, but a new face was hot on my heels – Nick Cassidy in his Jaguar. We were locked in a fight for the ages, pushing our cars and ourselves to the absolute limit.
It felt like a war out there. We were burning through energy like crazy, trying to outmaneuver each other. I could see Cassidy wasn’t letting an inch, his eyes focused on the prize. I wanted that win so bad, my first podium since New York felt like a lifetime ago.
Halfway through, things started to shift. Cassidy seemed to ease off the gas a bit, while I was still pushing hard. Maybe he was bluffing? But as the laps ticked by, I realized he was playing a smarter game. He was conserving energy, knowing he had enough of a lead to hold me off.
Frustration gnawed at me. I was right there, breathing down his neck, but every attempt to take the lead fizzled out. Cassidy, the new championship leader, deserved some credit though. He drove a smart race and ultimately came out on top.
Sure, I’m disappointed, but you can’t win them all. Cassidy had his day, but mine is coming. I can feel it. This race might have been a close call, but it’s only fueled my hunger for victory. Next time, the podium will be mine.
