Sources at the highest level have revealed that the topic of engine equalisation will be a prominent item on the agenda, triggered by an analysis conducted by the FIA. French manufacturer Alpine has expressed worries about its Renault engine lagging behind its competitors, and this has prompted the call for action.

The analysis of the power units’ performance indicates that the Renault engine might be trailing behind its rivals by approximately 15-25Kw (20-33hp). While Renault and the FIA have remained tight-lipped about the matter, the disparity has the potential to impact the fortunes of the Alpine team significantly.

The frustration for Renault lies in the engine freeze imposed until 2025, which restricts any substantial improvements to the power units. The FIA’s current technical regulations only permit modifications for reasons such as reliability, safety, cost-saving, or minimal incidental changes. However, the evidence of performance differences has caught the attention of the FIA, prompting the consideration of potential action to level the playing field.

Engine equalisation is not a novel concept in F1, as it was previously employed during the V8 era in 2007 to bridge the gap between teams exploiting reliability changes for an advantage. Leading up to the current engine freeze, it was deemed unnecessary to include a framework for equalisation, given the relative closeness of performances.

If the F1 Commission agrees that engine equalisation warrants attention, the question remains: how will it be achieved? Granting Renault complete freedom to make improvements is not a foregone conclusion. In the past, during a formal investigation into engine disparities in 2009, the FIA proposed holding back the performance of more powerful engines to balance the field.

Nonetheless, no consensus was reached back then, and the matter faded away. In recent years, there have been calls to equalise the turbo hybrids when Mercedes was ahead or Renault was struggling, but these pleas yielded no response from the FIA.

In addition to engine equalisation, the F1 Commission’s meeting in Belgium will also delve into other crucial topics, such as a potential tyre blanket ban and potential format changes to sprint race weekends.
