Jorge Martin’s quest for a factory MotoGP seat with Ducati in 2024, potentially at the expense of Enea Bastianini, reflects a respectful and patient approach. Despite his close competition with Francesco Bagnaia for the MotoGP title, Martin has shown no inclination to pressure Ducati for an early promotion to the factory team.
Enea Bastianini, currently Bagnaia’s teammate, has faced a challenging season, primarily due to injuries. After finishing third in the 2022 championship riding a previous-year Desmosedici, Bastianini encountered a series of setbacks. Injuries from crashes during the season opener and subsequent races forced him out of action, leaving him 19th in the overall standings among Ducati riders.
Ducati’s top brass has repeatedly expressed their commitment to Bastianini for the 2024 season, allowing him another opportunity to showcase his talent. However, recent reports have suggested that Ducati might consider the possibility of Jorge Martin joining the factory team in 2024, especially if he secures the championship riding for the satellite team Pramac.
While Ducati has not officially discussed this scenario, there is a sense that the idea of pairing Martin with Bagnaia at the factory team a year earlier than originally planned is not entirely off the table. The contracts of Bagnaia, Martin, Bastianini, and Franco Morbidelli, who is joining from Yamaha in 2024, all directly tie them to Ducati.
Jorge Martin’s contract, set to expire at the end of 2024, provides him with flexibility in the rapidly evolving rider market for 2025 and beyond. However, Martin and his team are taking a patient approach and are not pressuring Ducati for an early promotion at Bastianini’s expense. Martin is content with his current role at Pramac and has his sights set on securing a factory Ducati ride for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
This approach underscores Martin’s determination to earn a factory seat on merit rather than through pressure, maintaining a sense of class and respect within the competitive world of MotoGP.
