Hamilton and Russell Reflect on Challenging Sao Paulo GP
Lewis Hamilton expressed his disappointment with the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, describing it as a race to forget. The Mercedes driver, who finished eighth, shared his frustration with the performance of his W14 car, which he’ll be relieved to stop driving when the 2023 season concludes.

Starting fifth on the grid, Hamilton made an impressive start and briefly found himself in third place. However, the race took a turn for the worse after a red flag was brought out due to a crash involving Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen. At the restart, Hamilton lost a position to Fernando Alonso, and he continued to slip down the field, with Sergio Perez overtaking him a few laps later. After a pit stop for fresh tires, Hamilton lost out to Lance Stroll, Carlos Sainz, and Pierre Gasly before finishing in eighth place.

Reflecting on the challenging race, Hamilton remarked, “It didn’t feel as disastrous as yesterday’s Sprint race. Yesterday, when I finished, my tires were completely worn out. I believe I drove a better race today in terms of tire management, but the car’s performance was inconsistent throughout the lap. We need to figure out what’s causing this inconsistency. We were slow on the straights and struggled in the corners, making it a race to forget. However, there are always opportunities for learning, and I’m proud of the team’s efforts despite the difficulties.”

When asked if setup issues were responsible for Mercedes’ lack of pace over the weekend, Hamilton explained, “It’s challenging to pinpoint the exact cause. The car’s performance has been unpredictable, with good and bad sessions from one weekend to the next. We’ll review our approach and learn from this experience, even though our limited practice sessions made it tough. Our team remains resilient, and we must continue pushing forward. We have just two more races with this car, and then I can’t wait to move on.”

George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate, had a frustrating weekend as well. He was running behind Hamilton and was within DRS range early in the race but later encountered performance issues. Russell was eventually forced to retire due to a cooling problem. He shared his disappointment, saying, “It was by far the slowest weekend of our year. We had high expectations coming into this race, and we need to understand why things didn’t go as planned.”

Both drivers and the Mercedes team are looking ahead to the remaining races of the 2023 season with the hope of improving their performance and ending the year on a more positive note.
