The Manchester United vs Crystal Palace came in as a drama at Selhurst Park with the side of Manchester United defeating a half-time deficit and a long-term scoring streak on the ground to unlock an urgently needed victory that put them within the top six positions in the Premier league once more. United has been haunted by this stadiums years on years with not scoring a goal since Bruno Fernandes at January 2023, and not having won since Anthony Martial at July 2020. However, with a low first half and already behind the Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty twice made, nobody thought that Ruben Amorim and his team would ever repeat their Selhurst Park script. And in the scandal ridden game, durability and long awaited redemption, United at length had managed to generate the reply that their season had so badly required.
The game became premature when a new rule in the Premier League, which is not old enough to be called an old rule, was employed. First, Mateta also seemed to have scored through his first penalty when he made Senne Lammens go the wrong direction. But VAR soon notified the referee Rob Jones that the striker had struck the ball twice and crossed the line, which automatically caused a retake. It was ironical in the mix up on the pitch and the commentators. Players of United complained, the fans of Palace made fun and the visitors were seen briefly celebrating and then grumbled as Jones clarified the decision. Yet Mateta did not get nervous the second time around, he serenely just kicked a spot-kick in the opposite end and gave Palace the advantage at the break.
The objective jeopardized further the already troubled spell of the United, following the negative blow of the defeat against ten-man everton in their last game. With the second half, however, there was renewed aggression. At least part of that change was brought about by Joshua Zirkzee, the forward whose tenure at United has been typified by criticism, particularly following criticism after being reduced to booing by his own people in December.
He had lost all the confidence to the extent that he thought his future was beyond Old Trafford. However, Amorim continued to stick with him despite a silent first half that reflected his battle against Everton. At last, nine minutes up the second half, Zirkzee paid that devotion back a brilliant, vicious blow on an acute angle. His shot swerving attempt shot past the previous goalkeeper of United, Dean Henderson, and into the far corner, drawing the game levels and giving United performance hope. It was his initial league goal after nearly over a year.
Nevertheless, soon, the climax of Manchester United versus Crystal Palace occurred. When Palace was ready to adopt a normal defensive position when a free-kick was taken to them on the outskirts of their own box, Bruno Fernandes was aware of an opening and gave a short pass immediately to Mason Mount. Palace was taken by surprise and Mount had done a low shot in the corner that changed the flow of the game and gave an outstanding turnaround within a few minutes. Since then, United controlled the match wisely with availing the weakness of Palace who had visited Europa League only three days before. The guests by decreasing the pace, the repetition of the ball and the defense against the last attacks won the matches providing the visitors with the long-needed victory to conclude the three-match without the win streak.
Not only will the game be remembered because of the result, but also because of its stories: the rediscovery of Mount, the persistence of Zirkzee, the new grasp of the leadership of Fernandes and the resurgence of United. In the case of Palace, it was a wasted chance to make it to the top four as they would have achieved that had they won. It was a mentally tough night to United, where physical perceptions and figures would not come in handy. And with their followers singing praises to Eric Cantona on the field of his notorious 1995 incident, it suited the purpose that this was a symbolic event as well.
